The American Kennel Club announced today that the prestigious AKC National Agility Championship, sponsored by The Iams Company and Advantage flea control, will air on Animal Planet Sunday, February 9, 2003 from 8:00PM – 9:00PM.

Additional Airings on Animal Planet include:

  • Sunday, February 9 11:00PM -12:00AM
  • Monday, February 10 10:00PM – 11:00PM; 1:00AM -2:00AM
  • Saturday, February 15 1:00PM – 2:00PM

The 2002 AKC National Agility Championship brought together more than 500 top agility dogs — the largest-ever in the event’s seven-year history — from across the country to compete in Houston, TX, culminating with five dogs in each height category being crowned 2002 AKC National Agility Champions.

Agility trials allow dogs to demonstrate their speed and versatility by racing through a challenging course. Success requires proper training and, most importantly, teamwork between handler and dog. There are five different height categories, so dogs are tested fairly according to size, and also various levels of difficulty — from Novice to Excellent.

“We’re so pleased that Animal Planet has added the 2002 AKC National Agility Championship to its February schedule,” said Sharon Anderson, Agility Director, AKC. “Agility is so exciting to watch, as well as participate in, which explains why it’s the fastest growing dog sport at the AKC.”

Over one thousand agility trials were held throughout the year; dogs must qualify at the highest level of competition in order to compete at the AKC National Agility Championship.
