With devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy still gripping the Northeast, the American Kennel Club Humane Fund reminds clubs that the AKC Humane Fund is here to help them in their outreach to dogs and owners in their local affected areas with the “Sandy Fund.”
Created in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, the “Sandy Fund” was set up to help AKC clubs and affiliated organizations to provide services and support to dogs and owners in their own communities that are faced with the challenges of a natural disaster.
“The AKC Humane Fund is deeply concerned about the damage Sandy has caused,” said Daphna Straus, AKC Humane Fund Secretary. “Through the Sandy Fund, the AKC Humane Fund is helping communities achieve relief efforts for dogs and owners, now and in the future.”
After the fund was started with $20,000 donated by the Westminster Kennel Club and the AKC Humane Fund, the AKC worked together with Jason Taylor of Eukanuba and the New York Yankees to help pet owners affected in the region by arranging the donation of 44 tons of dog and cat food to be delivered to Yankee Stadium to assist in Yankees’ relief efforts.
AKC Clubs that have received Sandy Fund grants to help others include: Nutmeg Border Collie Club, Mohawk Valley Kennel Club, New England Saint Bernard Club, New Jersey Federation of Dog Clubs, Staten Island Companion Dog Training Club, and Northern New Jersey Great Dane Club, as well as the Humane Society of New York and Last Hope Animal Rescue.
