The American Kennel Club® and Eukanuba are pleased to announce the start of the commemorative poster competition in which artists are encouraged to submit an original two-dimensional painting or drawing celebrating the theme: “The Wonderful World of Purebred Dogs.” The poster will commemorate the 10th Annual AKC/Eukanuba National Championship where thousands of top dogs from around the globe compete for $225,000 in prize money and the chance to be named National Champion, one of the biggest honors in the dog world.

The theme of the artwork may focus on various subject matters, including: AKC events, the name of the event, the bond between humans and canines, purebred puppies, or the setting for this year’s event, and must depict multiple breeds.  The show will be in Long Beach, Calif. on December 4-5, 2010 and will be nationally televised.

“We are excited to once again host the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship poster contest,” said Ron Menaker, AKC/Eukanuba National Championship Show Chairman. “In the past, we have received many excellent submissions that reflect the beauty and joy of purebred dogs, as well as the excitement of the event.  In addition, we are pleased to help raise much needed money for Take the Lead, an organization that is extremely important and strikes a cord with many involved in the sport.”

“This competition is very much a part of the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship and fits naturally with the event because dogs have been depicted in art for centuries,” said Eukanuba’s Jason Taylor.  “The energy and excitement at the event is palpable and each year our winning artists represent the spirit and wonder of purebred dogs very well.”

The deadline for submissions is October 15, 2010 for online and postmarked mail-in entries. An expert panel will select ten finalists, with the grand prize winner chosen from among those finalists.

The grand prize winning artist will receive $1,000 and a three-day/two-night trip (including airfare and hotel) to the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship.  The winning artwork will be sold at the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship as a commemorative poster.  Proceeds from the sale will be donated to Take the Lead, a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization that provides support, care, and services for people in the sport of purebred dogs who suffer the devastation of a life-threatening or terminal illness.
