New York, NY – AKC President and CEO Dennis B. Sprung announces staff promotions as a result of a number of recent retirements in several departments.
“We are at a time when a number of members of our management team are reaching retirement age,” said Sprung. “As a result, AKC's carefully crafted Succession Plan has been implemented. We are moving forward by promoting seasoned AKC employees and welcoming new hires to the staff. As we look toward the future, we will build upon our established foundation and infuse energy, renewed perspective and fresh ideas into the American Kennel Club.”
John Lyons, Chief Operating Officer, has announced his retirement effective January 4, 2013. Lyons was hired in 2004 and brought more than 30 years involvement in the sport of purebred dogs as a breeder, exhibitor, multi-group judge, national and regional specialty chairperson, and AKC delegate with him to the position. After leaving his position managing Social Security and Medicare in New York's Hudson Valley, he has directed the day-to-day activities of the Operations Center in Raleigh. James T. Stevens, Chief Financial Officer, will retire effective end of July, 2012. Stevens has directed AKC's financial reporting, analysis and planning and related accounting practices. He oversaw the AKC relationship with lending institutions, managed the investments of the pension plan and operating funds of AKC, and was responsible for the Human Resources and Audit and Control functions.
The Board elected Peter Farnsworth as Chief Financial Officer following Stevens' retirement. Farnsworth has served as CFO for a number of organizations, including Amnesty International, where he oversaw the Finance, HR, IT, Legal, Risk and Facilities Management departments nationwide. He was also employed by the AmeriCares Foundation, Inc., where he was CFO for five diverse businesses. He received his MBA in Finance and Accounting from Columbia University.
Vicki Rees, AVP Human Resources, will retire on August 3, 2012. Rees joined AKC in 1998 and was responsible for recommending policies and directing HR programs and activities. The scope of her position included employment, compensation, benefits, training, and employee relations for nearly 300 employees nationwide. In line with management's succession plan Manager of Compensation and Benefits Ginger Bowen, who joined AKC in 2003, will be promoted to Director of Human Resources effective August 3, 2012.
Margaret Poindexter has been promoted to Vice President, effective immediately. Margaret serves a dual role at AKC as General Counsel and head of the Compliance Division. Poindexter joined AKC in 2008 after a 20-year legal career in private practice and as counsel with the federal government, for both the U.S. Department of Interior and U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
William Adams, as a result of succession planning combined with his pivotal contributions to AKC's Information Services department,has been promoted to Assistant Vice President of Computer Operations. Adams joined AKC in 1996 with 20 years of experience in Information Technology. His specialties include data center design, strategic planning, database architecture, storage migration and implementation. He currently manages staff members in the North Carolina and New York offices.
