ESPN is going straight to the dogs in the best way possible. On August 24, the American Kennel Club is proud to participate in ESPN Dog Day for the first time ever, with dog sports broadcast live on ESPN2 and the ESPN app.
What better way to spend a hot “Dogust” day than by watching dogs run, jump, and splash? Tune in beginning at 11:30 a.m. on the ESPN app, then continue on ESPN2 at noon. And if once wasn’t enough, most of the ESPN Dog Day programming will repeat on ESPNEWS from 6 p.m. until midnight.
So, grab your best four-legged friend, crank the AC, and tell every dog lover you know to get ready for a dog sports-filled Saturday. Here’s everything you need to know about how to watch ESPN Dog Day on August 24. All times are Eastern.
11:30 a.m. on the ESPN App – ESPN Dog Day Preshow (LIVE)
Saturday morning, ESPN welcomes the AKC and visiting canine athletes to its campus in Bristol, Connecticut. The live ESPN Dog Day Preshow will be hosted by ESPN personality (and dog lover) Anita Marks. Preshow includes live coverage from a mini version of AKC Meet the Breeds® with AKC Executive Secretary Gina DiNardo, as well as Agility, Dock Diving and Flyball warm-up runs ahead of the live competition that begins at noon. Matt Nelson, founder of “We Rate Dogs” and “Thoughts of Dog” social handles will join Marks for color commentary.
Be sure to download the ESPN app for iOS or Android before the show begins so you don’t miss a moment.
Noon on ESPN2: ESPN Dog Day Championship Pup (LIVE)
Starting at noon, three different dog sports take over the ESPN Campus: Agility, Dock Diving, and Flyball. The diving dogs competition will feature a 20,000-gallon pool. Anita Marks will host live coverage with commentary and analysis by Nelson and DiNardo.
Also included will be a SportsCenter Top 10 made up of all dog clips and “Furry Funnies.” Those two features will be narrated by SportsCenter anchor Neil Everett.
1 p.m. on ESPN2: Dog Tales
Four popular and touching dog-related features from E:60 and SportsCenter SC Featured will be part of a compilation show hosted by Tom Rinaldi. The four features will include:
- Arthur – A dog’s remarkable journey to find a home. The unlikely bond between a team of Swedish Adventure racers and an injured stray dog found in the Amazon Jungle – a distance of 6,455 miles doesn’t begin to measure the journey in this SC Featured piece from 2017, now being made into a movie starring Mark Wahlberg. Nominated for Sports Emmy.
- Fenway’s Best Friend — Two life-changing accidents and a PTSD diagnosis led Fenway Park’s head groundskeeper to a relationship with man’s best friend – the story of Dave and his dog Drago and how they built their own Field of Dreams. Dave and Drago will be in the studio for an interview with Rinaldi after the feature. Winner of Edward R. Murrow Journalism Award.
- Owen + Haatchi — An E:60 story from 2014 about a boy and his dog. But not just any boy, and not just any dog. Together, Owen and Haatchi, with their improbable winning streak and their remarkable bond, are like nothing ever seen. Winner of Edward R. Murrow Journalism Award.
- A Warrior’s Way – An SC Featured story from SportsCenter’s coverage of the 2017 Warrior Games. U.S. military veteran and double-amputee Christy Gardner is inspired to compete by her service dog, a Golden Retriever named Moxie.
2 p.m. on ESPN2: Always Late With Katie Nolan (Special Dogs Edition)
On this special “dog” edition of the popular ESPN+ program, host Katie Nolan welcomes several four-legged friends to the sets of ESPN’s programs, and she and the dogs have fun at the expense of some notable ESPN personalities.
