When you fall in love with an Afghan Hound, three things may attract you: their looks, temperament, and interests. Of course, there are traits of the breed that can be a handful, but like anything worth having, they’re worth the effort. Owners of the aristocratic Afghan Hound know that they’re special. Whether you’re a longtime fan of the breed or considering your very first Afghan, here are some Afghan Hound fun facts.
They’re Known for Their Distinct Looks
A long, silky, flowing coat protected the breed from the climate of Afghanistan, their homeland. This type of coat is often found on animals native to mountainous areas and high altitudes. The huge paw pads protected their feet, acting as shock absorbers on unforgiving terrain. Under all of that beauty is a powerful hound that can endure long hours on the hunt.
Afghan Hounds Are Very Dynamic
While Afghan Hounds are full of contradictions! While they’re loving and deeply attached to their people, they’re also known for being independent and regal. These dogs can be aloof, but also incredibly endearing, humorous, and even silly. Afghan Hounds will be the king of the castle in your home and take their true place as royalty.
They Were Independent Hunters
These intelligent working dogs are independent freethinkers. In Afghan Hound history, this helped them significantly as hunters. They were expected to work on their own, and were good at it. This characteristic stayed with the breed even today.
Afghan Hounds Are No Couch Potatoes
As magnificent as they look lying decoratively on the sofa, this is a breed that needs a great deal of exercise. They were historically working sighthounds. They need plenty of room to run around at full-speed — but always in a fenced-in area. But be careful: Afghan Hounds are also quite the jumpers, so that fence needs to be at least six feet high.
Afghans Require a Lot of Grooming
They don’t wake up like this! Afghan Hounds need regular grooming, including frequent baths and brushing. Be prepared to either spend money on a groomer, or spend many bonding hours bathing, brushing, and grooming your dog.
They’re Fast and Prey-Driven
Afghans have an unquenchable prey drive, and it still shows today. They’re lightning fast, and their speed and prey drive are an impressive combination. This also means that they can be far away in the blink of an eye, so don’t let them out of your sight!
For walks, you’ll want to use a strong leash and a slip or martingale lead. Although appearing dignified and elegant, Afghans are at heart forceful prey-driven hunters, intent on going where they want to go.
Afghans Were Brought to the U.S. in 1926
This regal dog has been famous throughout history and in recent culture. They became AKC-recognized in 1926. This was the same year that Zeppo Marx brought an Afghan Hound to the United States. Marx was part of the comedy group, the Marx Brothers, and was one of the first Americans to recognize the breed’s regal beauty.
The Afghan Hound Is Featured in a Famous Painting
Pablo Picasso owned not only one, but at least two Afghan Hounds. The famous painter featured the breed in his painting, “Femme au chien.” We can’t be sure that the Afghan Hound has anything to do with it, but the painting sold for almost $11 million in 2012.
‘Barbie’ Had an Afghan Hound
“Barbie,” the doll beloved by millions of little girls, had a pet Afghan Hound. First sold with the doll in 1979, the Afghan Hound’s name was “Beauty.” Collectors still sell the original version of the toy online.
Hound Are Deeply Loving
If you’re willing to put in the time and effort, this breed will reward you. They’re more than just a pretty face, so it’s important that they get a lot of exercise. If you give them what they need, the Afghan Hound will reward you by being a sweet, loving , and highly-entertaining member of your family.
