1. They Have a Long, Storied History
Developed in the Brittany region of northwestern France hundreds of years ago, they were prized by medieval hunters and poachers because of their all-around versatility.
2. They’re Considered Among the Most Versatile of Bird Dogs
The Brittany is small enough to stay within the hunter’s range. They also possess a coat that’s long enough to protect them from the brush without getting stuck in brambles and hedgerows. Besides having an exceptional nose, they can flush and retrieve on land and water, and they have the energy to go all day.
3. The Breed’s Name Changed in 1982
Originally called the Brittany Spaniel, the AKC dropped the word “spaniel” from the name. The American breed fancy determined the dogs are less flushing dogs like spaniels and more of a pointing breed.
4. Hunting Skills Serve Them Well in Dog Sports
As bright, trainable, and energetic as they are, Brittanys excel at dog sports, like flyball, Diving Dogs, and agility. In fact, a well-trained Brittany will often be up for almost anything.
5. They’re Champions Inside and Outside the Ring
Brittanys have earned the title of Dual Champion more than any other Sporting Group breed. In fact, the breed attained its 500th Dual Champion title in 2006. Only dogs that have been named both Show Champion and Field Champion win the title.

Many Brittanys need at least an hour or more of vigorous exercise every single day. Let them blow off steam somewhere they can enjoy an unbridled run, play enthusiastically with the kids, or join you on the hunt.
