Melanie Bereckis, of Jolanie Schnauzers in Washington, made the decision to get a Standard Schnauzer while living in Germany with her family. They wanted a dog with a natural protection instinct that is good with children and is no- to low-shedding. A Miniature Schnauzer was her longtime dog growing up, so she was intrigued by the Standard Schnauzer. She reached out to a German couple and met their Standard Schnauzers; they were everything she wanted. The size was nice and compact, and their bark was powerful. When she was ready for her first pup, Melanie reached out to a breeder in Poland and found her forever boy, Fritz.
AKC: How did you get started in breeding dogs?
Melanie: It was difficult coming from Germany to the States. I knew I had a lovely boy and wanted to show him and breed. I reached out to another breeder who helped me with the learning curve of being a responsible breeder. I became a member of the clubs and competed in conformation. It was not easy to accomplish everything, and I’m thankful for the people I have met along the way and for those in my corner cheering me on.
AKC: What is the most important thing to know about your breed?
Melanie: This breed is not easy by any means. They are stubborn and active. The puppy years are extremely active. They do shed, although it’s minimal compared to other breeds.
AKC: What is your favorite question to ask potential puppy buyers?
Melanie: I like to ask them why they chose a Standard Schnauzer.
AKC: What are the main qualities you look for in potential owners?
Melanie: I look for communication. I love to hear updates. Of course, I don’t like bad news but I don’t think I can make anything better if I don’t hear the bad. I love to see my pups.
AKC: What is the best advice you would give to novice breeders?
Melanie: It’s not easy and finding someone willing to be a mentor helps with becoming a better reputable breeder.
AKC: Do you participate with your dogs in AKC sports?
Melanie: I do Barn Hunt with all my dogs. I created a small course in my barn and have them hunt; I teach classes to the Open level. It also helps them signal for actual rats on my small farm. I also teach hand stripping.
AKC: What do you like best about breeding dogs?
Melanie: I become the one who knows the puppies from when they take their first breath. When I see them after they are older and they do something silly, it takes me back to when they were playing with their siblings in my home.
AKC: Do you have a favorite breeding story?
Melanie: I’m having many firsts, but I will never forget my first ever pup born. This was my blue boy, and he was having breathing issues. I was able to clear the airway for him to breathe. He became the largest boy and very strong. I will never forget that moment of fear of losing him and determination to save him.
