For many, summer is a time for travel – and whether it’s for dog shows and events or a personal vacation – travelers are more often bringing their dogs.
Did you know that many states have requirements for bringing a dog into the state – even for a brief period of time for a dog show? Before you travel with your dogs, be sure to check if there are specific veterinary certifications or other documentation required before bringing a dog into another state.
This summer, there may be even further requirements and restrictions if you are bringing a dog from an area with known cases of New World Screwworm. In attempts to stop the spread of this dangerous pest, some states are heightening protocols even more.
To assist you in determining the regulations for your state, AKC Government Relations (AKC GR) has updated a chart with information for all 50 states, along with links so you can check laws in their entirety. We’ve also updated a printable handout with basic information and a QR code to access the full chart. You can also visit www.screwworm.gov for the latest information from USDA on importation requirements related to screwworm cases.
Be sure to check these resources several weeks prior to attending a show out of state to make sure you have plenty of time to obtain appropriate documentation and veterinary certifications if required. Consider also sharing this information with show chairs and ask them to put information in the premium lists so exhibitors can be prepared.
This summer is also a great time to catch many lawmakers at home in their districts and educate them about canine legislation, purebred dogs, and responsible dog ownership and breeding. Earlier this month, over 40 lawmakers from Pennsylvania and New Jersey agreed to be listed as Honorary Chairs for an AKC Celebrates America 250 event in Philadelphia. Several of the lawmakers also came with their families to enjoy the event and watch dogs compete in events such as Agility and Dock Diving.
