It’s been a busy month for AKC Government Relations and our state federations, with 47 state legislatures and Congress in session – not to mention local governments throughout the country.
From New England to Hawaii, AKC GR has worked with state and local lawmakers, federations, club members and breeders to protect dogs and the rights of responsible owners and breeders. We strongly encourage you to take a look at the many legislative updates included in this issue to see what is going on in your region and how you can get involved.
AKC has been active in federal canine policy, too, hosting meetings with USDA staff, and preparing input on the newly-introduced 2026 Farm Bill and a recent USDA Request for Information on Standards for the Care of Breeding Female Dogs & Exercise and Socialization of Dogs. We encourage you to provide thoughtful comments on these measures as well!
The status of bills can change quickly. Be sure to regularly check the AKC Legislative Action Center at www.akcgr.org for the latest updates. Also, ensure your club has a designated Legislative Liaison who can receive and quickly share urgent alerts from AKC Government Relations.
GR staff also continue to get out and about. Recently, AKC GR joined the Pennsylvania Federation of Dog Clubs and local Pennsylvania clubs at the Pennsylvania Farm Show in inviting local lawmakers to come meet a variety of purebred dogs and enjoy performance demonstrations including retrieving and Agility. We also celebrated a significant milestone with the deployment of the 200th graduate of the AKC’s Patriotic Puppy Program.
These are great reminders of why being involved in canine legislation is so important – to continue to preserve the future of purpose-bred dogs. Making your voice heard will ensure the future of these dogs and our sports. Our thanks to all who have been working tirelessly with us at the beginning of this busy legislative season.
