As we welcome the beginning of spring, it’s a perfect time to reflect on the growing importance of responsible dog ownership and advocacy. The longer days, warmer temperatures, and blooming flowers mark a new season and new opportunities for fun with our dogs. They also serve as a reminder of the ongoing work required to protect our canine companions and the responsibilities we hold as dog lovers. This newsletter brings together key insights and actions from recent blog posts that highlight important issues facing dogs, their owners, and the legislation that affects them.

First, we dive into the crucial distinction between “Animal Rights” (also called “animal protection” and “Animal Welfare”. The two terms are often confused, but they have drastically different implications for dog lovers and the wellbeing of dogs. While animal rights/protection advocates seek to end all human-animal interactions, including breeding and ownership, animal welfare focuses on promoting the well-being of animals within the context of responsible ownership. Understanding this difference is critical as we continue to advocate for the future of our sports and the dogs we cherish.

Next, we explore the role of good laws in protecting dogs and responsible dog owners. Unfortunately, too many recent legislative efforts threaten these rights by imposing unreasonable restrictions. The American Kennel Club (AKC) works tirelessly to defend the rights of dog owners, and in this edition, we share easy steps AKC clubs and individual owners can take to help defeat harmful legislation and advocate for sensible laws that support the health, safety, and well-being of dogs.

As the seasons change, we also turn our attention to the unique needs of dogs as they face temperature shifts, from the cold of winter to the warmth of spring and summer. It’s important to recognize that dogs, just like people, have varying temperature tolerances depending on their breed, coat type, and other factors. We encourage policymakers to adopt policies that reflect the individual needs of dogs, ensuring that all breeds are safe and comfortable, no matter the weather.

Lastly, we highlight several prestigious awards and grant opportunities available through the AKC, celebrating outstanding contributions to responsible dog ownership and advocacy. From leadership in canine legislation to community achievements, these awards recognize the individuals and organizations making a positive impact in the world of dogs.

As we embrace the season of renewal, let’s continue to work together to protect our dogs, advocate for their well-being, and ensure that future generations of dog lovers can enjoy the companionship of their pets in a safe and supportive environment. Happy Spring!
