The AKC works with non-AKC service and sports organizations to recognize the titles that AKC-registered dogs earn in their programs. This includes the AKC Therapy Dog program and the AKC Search & Rescue program. AKC also recognizes titles of the Barn Hunt Association (BHA); North American Diving Dogs (NADD); the North American Flyball Association (NAFA); and UpDog Challenge disc organization. For information on how to apply, go to: AKC Title Recognition Program. Read on to meet All-American Dogs who are recent achievers in these sports.

AKC Therapy Dog Title

The AKC Therapy Dog Title program offers titles based on the amount of service that a therapy team has volunteered, giving more dogs the opportunity to earn the honor. Dogs also must be certified by an AKC-recognized therapy dog organization. The titles are:

600 visits to earn the AKC Therapy Dog Supreme (THDS) title.

400 visits to earn the AKC Therapy Dog Distinguished (THDD) title.

200 visits to earn the AKC Therapy Dog Excellent (THDX) title.

100 visits to earn the AKC Therapy Dog Advanced (THDA) title.

50 visits to earn the AKC Therapy Dog (THD) title.

10 visits to earn the AKC Therapy Dog Novice (THDN) title.

Congratulations to the All American Dogs who have earned the Therapy Dog Supreme title, having made 600 visits:

Lady Lucy Litfin THDS CGCA TKI owned by Jean Litfin of Macomb, MI

Lucy, now 11 years old, became a therapy dog through Therapy Dogs International when she turned 1 year old. She is the gentlest of dogs, a “natural empath, who has never hurt another dog or animal of any kind,” Jean said.

They have worked in many places, but Lucy’s favorites are the hardest ones, like ICUs and hospices. During summers, she works at Oakland University in their camp for children with autism. Recently at this camp, there was a young non-verbal, non-touch child in the group. Lucy sought him out, determined to win him over. “And she did!” Jean said. After a 10-minute interaction, the boy ran after her, calling ‘doggie, doggie, doggie!’ and then hugged them both. The staff was beyond excited about having this wonderful experience to report to the boy’s parents. “I have been privileged to witness events like this many times.”

When Lucy reached her 600th visit, she and Jean were in the infusion/radiation area of a hospital.

“I am grateful to be part of such a program and blessed with three therapy dogs who have brought comfort, joy, and laughs to many patients and staff over the years,” Jean said. “Thank you to AKC for the help and encouragement on the journey.”

Whispering Winds Juju RN THDS CGC TKA FITG owned by Bonnie Bird of Bellingham, WA

Juju was awarded his THDS title on May 17, 2024, after racking up more than 625 visits to hospital, cancer center, pediatric clinic, and retirement communities and schools.

He is a great hit with children because he also has an AKC Advanced Trick Dog Title and a Fetch title, and he loves to perform. He can pick up a credit card or a dollar bill. He can play dead when Bonnie pretends to shoot him. He will sit patiently at her side after she has thrown a ball and wait for the command “Fetch!” He can do the usual dog tricks (sit, shake, down, roll over) and he can do them to hand signals as well as verbal commands.

“He is sweet and affectionate and extremely well-behaved when he is in his therapy dog vest,” Bonnie said. “When I take his vest off, he can be a real twerp. This duality in his nature is completely compelling: he is a great dog!”

Crunchy THDS CGC owned by Joan Struble of Keystone, SD

Crunchy came to Joan as a dog with literally nowhere else to go. Though he was fearful and untrained, she quickly realized he had great potential. With love, training and then evaluation, he became a registered Pet Partners therapy dog. “Since 2016, Crunchy has visited weekly at our local Hospice House, as well as Black Hills Works, which serves mentally and physically disabled adults,” Joan said. “These are two very different environments, and we never know what we’ll encounter on each visit.”

A calm demeanor and friendly disposition endear Crunchy to almost everyone. He is endlessly patient. “Over the years he has been involved in many quiet miracles, many of which we were not aware of at the time,” Joan said. “I frequently tell people that the things that make him such an effective therapy dog have nothing to do with me or his training. It’s simply who he is.”

It touches Joan’s heart to see this dog who was considered without any value become such an important part of so many lives. She has no idea how old he is or where he originally came from. “People ask me why nobody wanted Crunchy. I can only reply that being a therapy dog is what he was always meant to be.”

Zara Woo FDC DCAT THDS CGCA CGCU TKE VHMA VSWB FITG FTR owned by Stephanie & Nicholas Jenson of Coon Rapids, MN

Zara Woo was rescued with her littermates when she was about 3 months old. She was transported to Minnesota and placed in foster with Midwest Animal Rescue Services (MARS) which is when Stephanie and Nicholas saw her. They fell in love with her gentle demeanor and kind eyes. She immediately connected with their other dog Rico and snuggled right up to him.

Zara has been a quick study, earning her CGC, CGCA and CGCU in short time. “Her desire to learn, her unflappable attitude toward new places and situations, coupled with her love for people made her the perfect candidate for a therapy dog,” Stephanie said.

In 2022 they were officially certified by Love on a Leash (LOAL) as a therapy team and hit the ground running. They began with volunteering at a charter school weekly and at special events such as Book Week when kids would take turns reading to Zara. Over time this turned into visiting twice a week during the school season, and Zara visited friends in special education, provided calming breaks for middle schoolers who needed some de-stressing cuddles and spent time with younger students who practiced their reading with her.

In mid-2023 they added rehabilitative, memory and hospice care to their visit schedule. “This seemed to be an underserved group that could greatly benefit from ‘puppy love,’” Stephanie said. “Together we love providing comfort, laughs (sneezing on command is quite the crowd pleaser trick) and ample quantities of ‘Zara Glitter’ to everyone we meet.”

Their milestone 600th visit was at Benedictine Living Community in New Brighton, MN, in early spring of 2024. “Zara is truly a one in a million-dog loved by many.”

Barn Hunt Summer 2024

Congratulations to these dogs on earning the Barn Hunt Champion (RATCh) title:

Sallie O Mallie RATCH CGCA CGCU TKN owned by Bonnie Cook of Corrales, NM

Sallie, a 13-year-old heeler mix, was adopted at 8 months old from Watermelon Mountain Ranch Animal Center. The Cooks were her fourth family. Sallie is a certified therapy dog and a Tales of Joy R.E.A.D. dog; she has brought joy, smiles and love to schools, hospitals, libraries, major corporations, government agencies and civic groups.

She earned her RATCh on March 22, 2024, at the Sheriff’s Posse Arena in Bernalillo, NM. “We thank Bosque Barnstormers Barn Hunt Club for their excellent training, patience and encouragement to help Sallie get to where she is today,” Bonnie said.

New Amsterdam’s Shade BCAT RATCH FTN owned by Jade Goh of Las Vegas, NV

New Amsterdam’s Shade, aka Cricket, is a 2 ½ -year old Dutch Shepherd. She joined Jade’s pack at 9 months old and gets along with everyone. She’s very toy and food motivated, loves to train, but has a great off switch. Cricket achieved her RATCH title on April 14, 2024, at the SmartyPaws Rat Pack trial in Las Vegas.

DM – Dock Master

Every Journey Needs An Atlas OA NAJ DCAT DM owned by Amy Chicoine of Fulton, KY

Atlas, a spirited 6-year-old, has a passion for speed. Whether it’s FastCAT, agility, or dock diving, he gives his all, never holding back. At just 19 inches tall, he has affectionately earned the nickname “Rocket Man” from fellow competitors, with a personal best in FCAT of 29 mph and a personal best in NADD Distance of 25 feet, 3 inches. He recently earned his NADD Elite Distance Title, jumping more than 24 feet in three splashes in a row.

Beyond his love for adrenaline-pumping activities and training, Atlas is Amy’s faithful companion on hiking trails, kayaking trips, and camping expeditions.

Atlas makes friends wherever he goes. During the week, he plays a special role as the unofficial mascot for the Mayfield Graves Long-Term Recovery Group, supporting staff and volunteers in disaster recovery efforts with tail wags and endless games of fetch. He knows the location of every treat drawer in the office and frequently uses his puppy dog eyes and head tilts to charm staff into indulging him.

His journey hasn’t been without challenges. In March 2022, he faced a health scare when a hemangiosarcoma mass was discovered and promptly removed. After a year of treatment, Atlas achieved remission and continues to thrive.

“Above all else, he has taught me to live for today and to be thankful for every trip to the start line with your canine partner. Atlas is a once-in-a-lifetime companion, and I am thankful for his continued presence in my life,” Amy said.

Madi’s Slate DM DS owned by Madison Aaron of San Antonio, TX

Madison was not looking for a dog, but it was certain after meeting Slate he was meant to join her family. “He is a very special dog,” she said. Slate has always been a lover of water; he had his first experience at a river when he was just 4 months old. Her other two dogs also love the water, and he was more than happy to join them.

Though she grew up watching dock diving competitions, Madison had no idea what they were or that any dog could participate. She and Slate had their first encounter at a dock diving facility called K9 Water World. “We started going simply because in Texas during the summer you either have to be swimming or be indoors. I had no clue what Slate was capable of. He got confident and eventually started jumping off the dock.”

Within four months of jumping off the dock for the first time, Slate had competed in two NADD competitions and hit his personal best of 20 feet 9 inches. After a winter break, they returned in the spring for Slate to get two titles: his Dock Senior and then his Dock Master on June 23, 2024, at K9 Water World in San Marcos, TX. Slate has hit a new personal best of 21 feet 6 inches, and Madison is thrilled to see where dock diving can take him. “We couldn’t have started this sport without K9 Water World and their amazing trainers and for that we are so grateful!”

ONYX

Sincity’s Polyjuice Potion CA BCAT ONYX RATS CZ8B DE DM HDM CGC TKA owned by Katie Weihbrecht of Iowa City, IA

Juice is a 7-year-old Border Collie and Whippet mix who came home to Katie around Christmas 2016 as a 2-month-old puppy, not long after she lost her first flyball dog to sudden heart failure. “She healed a piece of my heart and was an important ‘study buddy’ as I completed the last six months leading up to my PhD defense,” Katie said. Katie was already a part of a flyball team and so she began Juice’s flyball training on her first day home in Iowa. She debuted in January 2018 at 15 months of age and “hit the ground running,” quite literally. Flyball is one of her favorite things to do. While COVID delayed her title progression by 15 months due to the shutdown of NAFA, she earned her ONYX on Nov. 7, 2021.

Truth is a 6-year-old Border Collie and Whippet mix and is a full sibling to Katie’s first border whippet, Juice. “When you have a dog as amazing as Juice, of course you jump at the chance to have a full sibling,” Katie said. This is how Truth came to be a member of her family in October 2018 as a 2-month-old puppy. While his path to success wasn’t nearly as straightforward or easy as his sister’s, he has blazed a trail completely unique. COVID interrupted his training and delayed his debut until August 2021, but he has certainly made the most of the time he has been playing. He earned his ONYX two years after his debut at the same tournament on Aug. 19, 2023.

Truth has also made a name for himself in Fast CAT, having earned an invite to the 2023 Fast CAT Invitational, where he took 5th place overall in the large dog category. He is a tornado of limbs who loves to cuddle, while also ensuring one of those limbs steps just where you don’t want it. When he’s not flyballing or running Fast CAT, he can be found hiking or swimming to his heart’s content. Photo credit: Mya Mackey Photography

Trombley’s Jumpin Jack Flash ONYX owned by Mindy Trombley of Albuquerque, NM

Jumpin’ Jack Flash is a 6-year-old rescue. “He was very reactive and began playing flyball as a puppy, and it has been his saving grace,” Mindy said. Over the years he has excelled in this sport, gaining confidence that has carried over into all other areas of his life. “He now faces each day with a positive attitude and is able to participate in other sports as well.”

Flyball remains his favorite sport, and he has earned many titles in it – most recently the ONYX, achieving 20,000 points while racing with Bad Company Flyball at the Red, White & Altitude Tournament in Loveland, CO, on July 1, 2024. He continues to race and is close to achieving 30,000 points, and his next title. Outside of flyball, Jack is a very loving dog,and enjoys disc, tricks, swimming and learning new things.

FDCH

Bailey Ackels FDCH CGC TKI owned by Melanie Ackels & Casey Ackels of Vancouver, WA

When not being a house pet, 7-year-old Bailey and Melanie do disc, scent work, tricks, and flyball. He has earned his FDCH (Flyball Dog Champion) and FM (Flyball Master) titles. Bailey is a member of the Portland Tail Blazers flyball club located in Vancouver, Washington. He started flyball training in 2019, but his teaching and subsequent racing was put on hold because of the pandemic.

Bailey started racing in 2022 and received his FDCH title at The Kings Tournament in Abbotsford, British Columbia, Canada, on March 4, 2023. He loves racing with the Portland Tail Blazers. “He has learned so much and has gained a lot of confidence. He’s not the fastest dog, but he’s solid and can be counted on by his club,” Melanie said.

Bailey is a great brother to Aussie brother Cider, Treeing Walker Coonhound Misha, a cat named Thomas, and a 3-year-old human sister. Bailey occasionally is also a foster brother for Aussie Rescue.

He made his flyball racing debut in Indianapolis, IN, at NAFA CanAM – the largest annual flyball event – while racing for the first time with Bad Company Flyball in October 2022 at the age of 18 months. He won his first four titles at this tournament, including his Flyball Dog Champion (FDCH), earning his first 1,000 points. He has continued to race and has earned many more titles and is now close to 20,000 points. “He is an all-around super talented, loving dog. We are honored to be recognized by The American Kennel Club for his flyball achievement,” Mindy said.
