AGILITY

Masters Agility Championship (MACH)

MACH Racing On Arrows Edge MXB MJB MXF T2B2 owned by Nicole Shaffer of Colorado Springs, CO

In 2018, Nicole was left with a huge hole in her heart when she unexpectedly lost her first and only agility dog. She quickly took to searching for a puppy and came across an ad for a litter of puppies. She was drawn to an adorable tri-colored male that she had to meet. She made the trek to the foster home. “Everything about this puppy, and his life drew me in and I decided he was meant to be,” Nicole said.

Upon bringing Arro home, Nicole’s friends were excited to meet him and for them to start their agility journey. But she was apprehensive, worried he would not be an agility competitor due to his rough start in life. A friend encouraged her to join an agility foundation class to see how he would do and that is how she met her trainer and now good friend, Kara Mackenzie with FASTDoggie Agility. Within the first couple of classes, Kara told her Arro had “a ton of heart and would be a great teammate and contender.”

Over the next couple of years, Nicole learned handling skills, and Arro’s confidence grew. Before she knew it, they were consistently qualifying, ranking in the top, and receiving an abundance of compliments on the team they had become.

On July 6, 2025, at the Mile High Golden Retriever Club trial, Arro and Nicole were awarded the MACH. This was such a special accomplishment because not only was this Nicole’s first MACH title, but it was with her first AKC competition dog. “I could not be prouder of the competitor and partner Arro has grown to be.”

MACH Mr. Scamp CD RI MXB MJB NJP CAX FCAT ACT2 TKN owned by Leigh-Anne Congdon of Danville, PA

Scamp is a scruffy terrier mix with a big personality and an even bigger heart. Adopted from the Antietam Humane Society in Pennsylvania at 8 weeks old, he made his intentions clear from the start by barreling toward his future handler with joyful abandon. Now nearly 10, Scamp has grown into an exuberant, sometimes overzealous, agility partner whose enthusiasm never wanes.

In 2020, during the height of the pandemic, Scamp faced a life-threatening battle with inflammatory bowel disease, requiring a feeding tube to keep him alive. After extensive diagnostics, including exploratory surgery, he began a slow but determined recovery. Thanks to loving care and a specialized hydrolyzed protein diet, Scamp returned to full health — and to the agility ring.

On Aug. 10, 2025, at the Mt. Nittany Dog Training Club’s trial in State College, PA, in the presence of so many friends and supporters, Scamp earned his MACH, a testament to his resilience, drive, and sheer joy in the sport.

In addition to agility, Scamp has earned AKC titles in Obedience (CD), Rally (RI), Fast CAT (FCAT), Coursing (CAX), and Trick (TKN). He’s just as enthusiastic outside the ring, where he delights in catching discs, playing fetch, and hiking with his people.

“He approaches every run with tail-wagging excitement and greets every person and dog with unfiltered affection,” Leigh-Anne said. “Scamp is more than a MACH dog — he’s a survivor, a teammate, and a beloved companion whose happiness is contagious. He is, quite simply, the dog of a lifetime.”

MACH Clements’ Augustus MXB MJB XF owned by Liz Clements of Riverton, WY

Gus has the striking looks of a red and white Border Collie. He was born on Sept. 18, 2018, and has been Liz’s enthusiastic, loyal partner in every adventure since. On July 19, 2025, Gus and Liz achieved a dream milestone: earning the MACH at Yellowstone Dog Sports in Roberts, MT.

Living in rural Wyoming means Liz and Gus can only attend about seven or eight agility events a year, which makes this accomplishment especially meaningful. Every trial required extra planning, travel, and commitment — but each one was an opportunity for them to grow as a team.

Much of their success came from consistency, practice, and the incredible guidance they received through the Bad Dog Agility online training program. Their resources and community helped them stay motivated and connected, even from a distance.

“Earning our MACH was more than just a title — it was the culmination of years of teamwork, patience, and pure joy in running together,” Liz said. “I’m so proud of Gus and grateful for everyone who supported us along the way.”

MACH Mascari’s Zigmund Floyd MXB MJS XF CGC owned by Maggie & Bob Mascari of Post Falls, ID

Maggie and Bob adopted Ziggy eight years ago. Maggie handled him, along with their Golden Retriever Cubby, on a pre-school television show called Mutt & Stuff. She and Bob fell in love with him and adopted him at the end of the show, when they moved up to Idaho.

“He has been a great agility dog and loves running – he’s not the speediest but he’s consistent,” Maggie said. “Agility has made him much more confident.”

Ziggy is now almost 11 years old and still in great shape. Maggie believes running agility has made that possible. Ziggy earned his MACH on Aug. 10 at the Spokane Dog Training Club trial.

MACH Rikki II MXB MJB NF owned by Chris Hill of Glendale, AZ

Nine-year-old Rikki has been competing in agility since he was 2 years old. He and Chris

Rikki is a happy and outgoing dog who loves doing just about anything with Chris. “He loves to express himself with a loud WOO WOO! It’s hard to miss Rikki’s voice,” Chris said. “Everyone is his friend.”

They often spend their summers hiking the mountains of Arizona. Rikki’s favorite is hitting the lakes and finding a rock close to shore, standing on it barking encouragement to his buddies to retrieve the stick. “Why bother when someone else can retrieve it?” Chris hopes to qualify for the AKC National Agility Championship in 2026. The next goal for this pair will be a PACH.

Rikki’s MACH was achieved at the Border Collie Club of Arizona trial in Westworld, AZ, on Aug. 23, 2025.

MACH Rayn’s Pitch Perfect Corbin MXB MJS MFS TQX T2B2 FCAT ACT1 CGC TKN owned by Teresa Hendrix of Beavercreek, OH

Corbin earned his MACH on Aug. 23, 2025, at Queen City Dog Training Club in Sharonville, OH. He earned his Triple Q Excellent Title on that day too. On the way to earning his MACH, he has earned his Canine Good Citizen, Trick Dog, and Fast Cat FCAT titles.

But his first love is agility, there is nothing he loves more than being on the course running. “There is nothing more fun than running a Maserati!” Teresa said. “Corbin is an awesome teammate and source of fun, love, joy and adventure. He loves going to work with me and keeping me company. He is the best all-around companion you could ask for.”

MACH Golden Nugget Takeo MXB MJS MFB T2B owned by Krisanne Crosby of North Chesterfield, VA

Takeo’s mother was rescued four years ago when she was very pregnant. Lori Elliott, Krisanne’s veterinarian of 37 years works with the animal shelter in Goochland, VA, and took her home to raise the litter.

Krisanne met Takeo there when he was 5 weeks old and adopted him at 8 weeks. He is a Chihuahua mix, a smart little guy with lots of energy and drive who loves agility. His name means valiant warrior in Japanese, and he is living up to it despite his 10-pound size.

He earned his MACH on Sept. 14, 2025, at the Bulldog Club of America trial at Level Up Dog Sports in Mechanicsville, VA.

Congratulations also to these dogs who have earned their first MACH title:

Preferred Agility Championship (PACH)

PACH Vine OA OAJ MXP4 MXPB MJP4 MJPB PAX OF XFP T2BP ACT1 owned by Brenda Stukey of Bixby, OK

Brenda rescued Vinny through the Tulsa Animal Shelter in 2015. He was a 3-year-old, 10-pound Chihuahua mix with an abundance of energy.

They immediately started classes in obedience, ally and agility and eventually settled on agility. Friends encouraged Brenda to attend her first AKC agility trial in 2020.

“I had minimal knowledge with this Novice A dog,” she said. “Let’s just say Vinny enjoyed visiting everyone in the ring.” After a few years Brenda got hooked on the sport and decided she needed to take the time to learn how to be a better handler.

Much to her surprise Vinny reached the Masters level in 2024. By this time, he was 11 years old but Brenda decided they would give achieving his PACH a try.

Their enthusiasm was fueled when Vinny qualified for the 2025 AKC National Agility Championship in Tulsa, OK. They both got an extra boost of energy as the crowd cheered when it was announced over the PA system that Vinny was a rescue from the local city shelter.

Vinny earned his PACH on July 27, 2025, in El Reno, OK, at the age of 12.

Vinny will turn 13 in just a few weeks and will begin easing into retirement. “His new job will be team mascot for our Danish Swedish Farmdog puppy, Journey. I have no doubt there are many great memories ahead.”

PACH Ohlhausen’s Sadie OA OAJ MXP3 MXPB MJP3 MJPB PAX NF XFP T2BP owned by Robin Ohlhausen of Albuquerque, NM

Robin had seen agility and thought it would be a fun sport to get involved in so when her family was ready for a puppy, she looked for a dog that might be a candidate for the sport. Sadie, a Golden Retriever mix, joined the family in 2021 and they fell in love instantly with her. Agility and obedience classes were hard to come by due to COVID, but they were able to join a class when she was about 9 months old and they both fell in love with the sport.

Sadie’s first trial was in October 2023 and “the rest as they say is history,” Robin said. “The whole family joined in to participate, and Sadie’s best reward for a run is to see how many pets she can get (treats are nice too).” They have become a part of an amazing agility community in Albuquerque, NM, and they train with A+ Agility where they continue to learn and be challenged every class.

Sadie received her PACH at the Durango Agility Club trial in Ignacio, CO on Aug. 1, 2025. “Instead of a victory lap Sadie made a beeline for pets from Jo!”

When Sadie is not training or competing, she loves to be hiking, running, walking, kayaking, snowshoeing, or sitting on her hill enjoying the wind.

PACH RACH Ruby Blue Mingus CDX BN RM4 RAE2 FDC AX AXJ MXP3 MXPB MJP4 MJPB PAX MXF MFPB T2BP4 CGC TKP owned by Stephanie Pollard of Alvarado, TX

On Aug. 11, 2025, six years to the day from her first agility trial, 10 ½ year-old Ruby finally celebrated her PACH with friends, mimosas, and a custom Ruby cake.

Nine years earlier, she was a scrawny stray, picked up hitchhiking in a West Texas ghost town by a rescue volunteer, who had named her by the time they reached their destination. Red and white with glowing green-gold eyes and described as “sugary sweet,” she was exactly what I was looking for.

She quickly proved to be equally “busy” as she was sweet, so we began looking for her purpose. Soon she was excelling in obedience foundations, rally, and finally agility, with some great tricks up her sleeve too. A favorite is placing quarters in her piggy bank.

“Ruby may not be the highest scoring dog in the Utility ring, but she is definitely the most entertaining. She talks, dances, sings, and has the best time of anyone there. Her little nub never stops wagging. At every trial, we are greeted by everyone asking ‘What’s Ruby going to do today? HaHaHa!,’ “ Stephanie said. “Those same people celebrated with us when after three years of attempts to Q in Utility, she finally got her first with a score of 171.5. The judge suggested that we try to get more points next time!

“Every day is Ruby’s best day ever, and her enthusiasm is contagious. She loves everyone she meets, she loves every place she goes, and she loves everything she does, even posing for Ruby’s 13 Nights of Halloween and 12 Days of Christmas every year for her Instagram followers. (@rubybluemingus) She is a once-in-a-lifetime dog, and I’m so grateful she is sharing it with me.

MACH PACH Lucy Keltner MXB MJB MXP3 MXPB MJP3 MJPB PAX MXF T2B CGC TKA owned by Bill Keltner of Bonita Springs, FL

This little rescue dog joined the Keltner family almost 10 years ago. They lived on a river and the first indication that she was gifted in agility was that she loved to walk on the bulkhead. So, Bill put up two-by-fours on blocks, and she mastered walking on that. Then he built a teeter-totter. One experiment led to another and, before Bill knew it, they entered the uncharted territory called Dog Agility.

They started working on tricks and Lucy really enjoyed being the star of the show with more than 20 commands under her collar. Lucy is a Certified Alliance Therapy Dog and has visited rehab facilities, senior citizens settings (with an audience of 60 folks) as well as veterans’ homes and school settings with students with severe disabilities.

Lucy loves to perform and is always met with joy and enthusiasm. On one occasion she joined the community Halloween party as a surfer. She was dressed in a Ron Jon tee and sunglasses. She rode her skateboard, won first place and $50!

She does not like elevators or climbing the stairs at Bass Pro Shop. She does however love to sneak up on waste paper baskets and shred the tiniest piece of paper. “Probably Lucy’s very best, self-taught performance is counter surfing!” Bill said.

Lucy received her MACH followed by her PACH in Aug. 15, 2025. She also has her CGC and AKC Trick Dog Advanced title. She continues to train at Bratty Paws in Punta Gorda, FL.

COURSING ABILITY – CAT

One of the easiest ways to get involved in the world of dog sports is with a Coursing Ability Test (CAT). Designed specifically for newcomers, each dog chases after an artificial lure on either a 300- or 600-yard-long course and must finish in less 1 ½ minutes and 2 minutes, respectively.

CAX (Coursing Ability Excellent)

Mr. Vinny RI CAX FCAT3 THDS RATN CGC TKI FITS owned by Erin Miller of Waverly, WV

On July 5, 2025, Erin’s little friend earned both his CAX title and FCAT3 title in Wilmington, OH. “Although Vinny is almost 12 years old, his little legs can still motor, and he is often recognized in the top three fastest dogs in his size at the events he attends,” she said.

She rescued Vinny over 11 years ago and knew early on that he was a special boy. Vinny proved her right by passing his therapy dog test a few short months after she adopted him. “Vinny is the most intuitive pup that I have been blessed to share my life with, showcasing his skills as an employee at our local hospital,” she said. When Vinny is working, he is calm and collected, almost taking his job too seriously, embracing all the “feels” from the patients and staff he visits.

Erin wanted to find an outlet for him, something that he would undoubtably understand that he was “off the clock” while doing. That is when she found CABT and FastCAT. When they attend these events, the happiness radiates from him, and he lets out intermediate barks of joy – something he would never do on a normal day. For them, this sport is much more than just chasing a “bunny.” It gives them a way to bond with one another that they do not get on a typical day. “Watching my amazing boy be able to let loose and show so much excitement makes my heart incredibly happy!”

Sorensen’s Kiwi Jellybean CAX FCAT3 SCN CGC TKN FITG owned by Patrice Sorensen of South St. Paul, MN

Five-year-old Kiwi made her way to Minnesota from Alabama when she was about 6 months old. She found herself in the shelter that Patrice was externing at as a senior veterinary student. It was always a dream of hers to bring home her first dog spay and that turned out to be Kiwi!

“She is a sensitive girl who’s afraid of many things,” Patrice said. “She did her first fun run when she was 1 year old and has been hooked since.”

Kiwi turns into a completely different dog at coursing events, dragging Patrice to the lure and letting out a characteristic “pittie shrill.” She lives to chase the bunny and can often be found barking at it or taking it right off the line at the end. She earned her CAX on Sept. 7, 2025, at King’s Ranch in Ramsey, MN, with the Minnesota Coursing Association.

Coulee’s Wild Heart of 7 Swans’ Bindi Girl Crow AX AXJ MJP OF XFP CAX FCAT6 ACT2 ACT2J CGC TKN owned by Anjie Crow of Hermitage, TN

The first time Bindi, a cattle dog/American Eskimo mix, saw a white garbage bag zipping across the grass, she stopped dead in her tracks. What is that? And it’s moving! And then it stops… and goes again!

This was at a Fast CAT event for another of Anjie’s dogs, and Bindi was simply there as a spectator. At the time, she was 1 year old and had been recently adopted from Heart of a Border Collie Rescue in Minnesota in April 2021.

Bindi’s first Fast CAT run was that September, and she took to it immediately. Seeing how focused Bindi was, Anjie entered her in her first CAT event in March 2022 where Bindi found her favorite sport, earning her CA title that same weekend. The following year she went on to earn her CAA.

Bindi is very patient at the start line. She doesn’t struggle to stay still and is very quiet and focused. She takes off with great speed and enjoys barking loudly and frequently as she rounds those corners. Bindi has never lost sight of the lure on the course and never lost interest. When the run is over, she has been seen catching the bags a time or two, but she mostly comes to a halt and just stares at them. Anjie needs to pick her up and carry her off the course at the end or else Bindi would stay there all day.

Bindi is now 5 years old and received her CAX title at the Jackson Tennessee Dog Fanciers Association event in Jackson, TN, on Sept. 13, 2025.

RALLY

Rally Championship (RACH)

RACH Rowdy Boy RM3 RAE2 RC AX AXJ XF CGCU TKN owned by Vindy Ratz of Plummer, ID

Rowdy is the first dog Vindy has ever competed with. She started taking classes for obedience and the club told her that she and Rowdy could compete in AKC trials. They started with obedience, quickly switched to rally, and started going to trials.

Vindy then learned about agility, which is the sport Rowdy loves the most. They have two double Qs and are working on more. “This is also great for me to keep me in better shape as I get older,” Vindy said. “The thing I like the most is that you can earn titles and championships without having to be first place.”

Vindy loves cheering everyone on and telling others about how much fun it is and has used a lot of their rally training in everyday life. “Having something to do and learn really helps the dogs and I think they love it too!”

Rowdy’s RACH was earned at the Greater Spokane Shetland Sheepdog Club’s trial on July 25, 2025.

MACH RACH Django Julio RM4 RAE2 MXB MJS XF CGC TKN owned by Mindy Sherwood of Fort Collins, CO

Django is a “super mutt” that was rescued as a stray in the midwestern United States. He was transported to Colorado as a young adult, and Mindy adopted him from the rescue where she volunteered as a dog trainer. Django started in rally in 2023 as a senior at 10 years old. Rally was the sport he retired to, from agility where he had earned his MACH title.

He had no formal obedience/rally-specific training before their first trial, and yet he earned titles and placements quickly! A RACH was never one of Mindy’s goals for him due to his age and how long it could take to achieve, but when he achieved his Rally Excellent title in just seven months after his debut, she figured “why not just keep playing since he was enjoying it so much!” In July 2025, not long after he turned 13 years old, Django achieved his RACH at the Central Wyoming Kennel Club show in Casper, WY.

After achieving the RACH, he is officially retired from all competitions. “The completion of this title would be bittersweet, knowing we would never step into the ring together again,” Mindy said. “But happiness lies in knowing we still wake up together every day and can enjoy long walks, play time, and lots of training at home!”

RACH Mj’s Golden Treasure CDX BN RM3 RAE2 FDC CA SCN SIN SHDN CGC FITG owned by Mary Jane Forsythe of Memphis, TN

Treasure came into Mary Jane’s life when she was asked to foster her mother and her five 2-week-old puppies. As the days and weeks passed, Treasure and Mary Jane developed a strong bond. When it came time for the puppies to be adopted, she could not let this special one go.

Mary Jane learned that the puppy was mostly Chihuahua and started puppy classes with her very early. Treasure has earned titles in obedience, scent work, Fit Dog, and Coursing Ability. “She is willing to try it all!” Mary Jane said.

On Sept. 19, 2025, Treasure achieved her Rally Championship in Paducah, KY. “Not a day goes by without me being so thankful I kept my little golden treasure.”

OBEDIENCE

Utility Dog Excellent (UDX)

RACH Just Dill With It UDX PCDX OM1 GO VER RM2 RAE2 OA OAJ OF CA BCAT CGCA owned by Susan Staffeld of Beebe, AR

Pickle is Susan’s first dog to train to the Utility obedience level.

“I had no idea what I was in store for chasing a UDX title. This is by far the hardest thing I’ve done with any of my dogs in any sport, but also what I am most proud of.,” Susan said. “We worked so hard at this that we ended up earning our OM1 title the day before our UDX, because when we did qualify in Utility, it was usually with very high scores!”

Pickle is a low confidence and low drive dog, so the stress and independent work required to trial Utility are a big struggle for her.

“I don’t always know how to challenge her with proofing while still supporting and building her up, but she has made me a better trainer and better able to help other people that we train with,” Susan said.

She said she has received invaluable help from obedience instructors at the Little Rock Dog Training Club.

“My biggest advice to new obedience trainers is to STICK WITH IT. It is so hard, but when you get even little glimmers of improvement in the ring, it just makes it so worth it. And you realize that the journey itself is really what it’s all about with obedience, and what makes success that much sweeter.”

Utility Dog (UD)

Azani UD RM OA NAJ SHDN TKA owned by Maddy Thomas of Luther, OK

Maddy adopted Azani when he was just 8 weeks old from a farmer who had an unplanned litter. He was the last pup — a bit sickly yet brimming with life and promise. The moment she brought him home, they began building a strong bond through training sessions and hiking adventures.

Azani showed an early passion for learning, excelling in agility and trick training. As he matured, he and Maddy took on new challenges together, venturing intorRally and competitive obedience. Obedience quickly proved to be their biggest test as a team. Maddy had never competed in rally or obedience before, and without a club or mentor to guide them, she and Azani had to learn everything on their own.

They spent countless hours practicing both at home and at Maddy’s training center before entering trials. Each time in the ring was a valuable learning experience — sometimes frustrating but always pushing them closer to their goals. Perseverance became their greatest tool.

After many failed attempts, they finally began to find their rhythm. On June 29, at the Oklahoma City show, they earned their first Utility leg. Then, on Sept. 6-7 in Elk City, OK, Azani proudly finished his Utility title.

“This journey has been one of growth, patience, and unwavering dedication,” Maddy said. “Earning that title wasn’t just a victory in the ring — it was a celebration of the bond we’ve built and the challenges we’ve overcome together. I couldn’t be prouder of what we’ve accomplished.”

TRACKING

Tracking Dog (TD)

Howard’s Oliver TD TDU CGC TKI owned by Natalie Howard of Fairbanks, AK

Two-year-old Oliver was born and raised in Fairbanks, AK. He earned his TD on Aug. 10, 2025, at a test held by the Tanana Valley Kennel Club at the Chena River Flood Control Project in Fairbanks. And on Aug. 31, he earned his TDU at a test held by TVKC at Growden Park in Fairbanks.

Both Oliver and Natalie’s other dog, Eva, compete in AKC Tracking, Scent Work, Agility League, and are working on obedience. Eva, a Black Russian Terrier, is Oliver’s constant companion.

“The two of them may look a motley pair, but they get along in all ways,” Natalie said. Her older BRT, Elsa, has done a great job helping to raise the two of them.

Oliver loves to play with his ball and watch TV (especially when other dogs appear). He likes the snow and doesn’t mind the cold Alaskan winters at all, playing right alongside Eva (who is bred for Siberia). “He goes with me everywhere and is the perfect companion dog.”

SCENT WORK

Scent Work Detective (SWD)

Camp Chaos’s Ain’T That Shocking BCAT SWD SWM SCME owned by Michele Gray of Lexington Park, MD

Michele adopted Static from a shelter in June 2017. They started their AKC Scent Work career in March 2022 and in just a year and half, on Nov 26, 2023, they earned their Scent Work Master title at Hampton Roads Obedience Training Club in Virginia Beach, VA. “The best part of that day was earning HIT for both SWM trials,” Michele said.

Static made Michele fall in love with Scent Work so in October 2023 she decided to start her journey to becoming a Scent Work judge, putting her Search and Rescue background to good use.

The Talbot Kennel Club in Ridgely, MD, offered fun challenges, but the next six months were rocky as they struggled to come together as team. Michele decided to take time off from the Detective level and they focused on how to communicate, trust and become a stronger team. They resumed trialing on Oct. 24, 2024, and earned two Q’s that day. This gave them the confidence to continue and over the next several months they became a more successful team. “The Q’s kept coming, and the next thing I knew I was one Q away from our title,” Michele said.

Since she was judging on Aug 8, 2025, at the Bella Vista Training Club – Delaware Valley Bullmastiff Club trial, she decided to enter Static in the Detective trials. “When I said ‘FINISHED,’ and the judge said ‘YES,, it was an emotional moment.”

“What a fabulous journey it has been. I look forward to seeing what the future holds for Static and me.”

CT Coastal’s Saint NAJ NAP SWD SWM SCME owned by Sally Nesbitt & Robert Long of Spring Valley, CA

Saint is a German Shepherd Dog and Belgian Malinois mix, one of a litter that was confiscated from a home that had been raided. Sally adopted him through Coastal German Shepherd Rescue in San Diego, CA.

Sally and Robert had been watching the organization’s website for available dogs when Saint’s litter came to the group. They visited the puppies numerous times and were focused on adopting a female puppy, but Saint kept sitting on their laps wanting their attention. They would put him aside and play with the females, but he kept going up to their faces. “We realized we were looking at the wrong pups; it was Saint who wanted to come home with us,” Sally said.

Saint, an AKC Tracking Champion, loves to work. In agility he is in the Excellent class, in Barn Hunt he is working on his Senior title, and in Scent Work has earned his AKC Detective title – all close to his third birthday.

In Scent Work, Saint searches slowly and methodically. “While he is no speed demon,” Sally said, “his attention to detail means that he rarely misses a hide. His few failures were primarily due to handler error!”

A true pleasure to be with, Saint loves getting attention and being petted. Though he is on the large side, over 28″ inches at the shoulders (he was taller than the 28″ measuring wicket), in his mind he is “just a love bug.”

Saint (pictured, at right) is the second dog in San Diego to achieve the AKC Scent Work Detective title. The first dog in San Diego to earn this title was Sally’s other dog Poppy, who also was adopted from Coastal German Shepherd Rescue of San Diego. “It takes 58 qualifying scores to climb up the title ladder to earn the AKC Detective title. We don’t even count the times we did not qualify at a competition,” she said.

Secondhand Chevy SWD SWM owned by Jenny Martens of Arlington, SD

Chevy was 5 years old when Jenny adopted him from a shelter. “He was slightly ‘used,’ but I thought he had a few more good miles left in him!” she said.

When Jenny visited the shelter in December 2020, she found a brown and black, medium-sized Border Collie mix. Despite his background, he was still “well-adjusted, silly, social and a little weird, getting butt scratches, licking, and smiling at everybody who dared to pet him at the shelter.” Since his favorite hobby seemed to be sniffing, within 72 hours of bringing him home, Jenny started training him on odor, and he earned his first AKC Novice scent work titles in May 2021.

Chevy has tried rally, obedience, agility and Fast CAT – “although he just didn’t see the point of any of them!” Jenny said. “He likes running in the Detective class because he can always run off leash, spend time with his favorite person and earn all the snacks.” Some of their best memories as a team are using him as a demo dog for other judges – not running for ribbons or titles, but just for the pure joy of the game.

Chevy earned his 10th qualifying Detective run with a first place at the Fargo Moorhead Kennel Club’s AKC Scent Work trial on Sept. 6, 2025 just a month shy of his 10th birthday. He is now “Secondhand Chevy SWD SWM,” the middle child of Jenny’s pointy-eared pack of herding dog mixes.

Loudini MXP MJP2 OFP T2BP ACT2 ACT2J SWD SWM SHDM CGC TKA owned by Amanda Darnell of Crosby, TX

Amanda adopted Lou from the SPCA in 2018. He’d had multiple surgeries after an attack and underwent heartworm treatment. Soon after Amanda took him home, she discovered that he loved to work. She started teaching him tricks and he earned three Trick Dog titles. Agility training started in 2019, and he got his Masters titles in 2024.

In 2021 they started training for Scent Work. Their first class was in April, and they competed in their first trial in October, where he was High in Trial. They were hooked! Amanda and Lou made their way up through the levels and were excited to start running in Detective.

Lou loves to “find it” and runs into the search area with such enthusiasm, usually getting a few laughs. “He searches with so much joy and excitement,” Amanda said. “There’s never a doubt how much he loves this game.”

The pair got their first Detective Q on Dec. 9, 2023, and their 10th Q on Sept. 7, 2025 at the Houston Area K9 Scent Work Club at the Katy ISD Ag Center. They have enjoyed some fun trial locations at fairgrounds, event centers, schools, a western town, and a water park.

“I’m so fortunate that I get to line up with such a fun and smart dog.” Amanda’s husband attends every trial and watches all their runs, and she loves that they have a great support system behind them. She has started teaching and has five classes a week in which she gets to help other teams learn and achieve their goals. Lou is her demo dog and happily shows the teams how much fun it is to sniff. “Lou is a special little dog, and I’m so lucky he’s mine. He’s shown me that anything is possible.”

Gracie Adair RM FDC SWD SWME CGC TKP owned by Christine Adair of Churchville, MD

Gracie is a 3-year-old All American Dog who came to Christine as a pup with a badly infected eye needing surgery.

“I should have bought a lottery ticket the day I met that puppy,” she said. “She was so smart and she loved to work and learn.” Despite being fun to train, Gracie had some fear/confidence issues that Christine felt were preventing her from becoming the dog she was supposed to be. So, to build her confidence, they began their Scent Work journey.

Never having trained a dog in the sport, Christine felt that she’d made mistakes. “But Gracie is resilient and good natured,” she said.

At their first trial in December 2023, Gracie won Novice High in Trial. Since then, she has earned her Scent Work Master Elite (40 Master qualifying runs), three Master High in Trials, and on Sept. 7, 2025, the coveted Detective Title at Carrol Kennel Club’s beautifully run Inaugural Trial, with Detective wins and placements along the way.

Besides Scent Work, Gracie has earned her AKC Rally Master, Trick Dog Performer, and CGC. They also enjoy agility together and hope to play in that ring next year. “Gracie will be 4 years old on Oct. 22, when I do plan to buy that lottery ticket.”

(Max) Maximus FDC SWD SWME SHDE CGC ATT owned by Travis Norwood of Greenville, SC

Travis first met 2-year old Max after the dog was abandoned in his neighborhood. “At the time I wasn’t looking for a dog, never owned a dog, and certainly didn’t know I needed a dog,” he said. “After officially adopting him, I realized that we both needed some training, so I visited a training club where we observed a scent training class.”

Travis signed Max up for the scent class, and he realized that Max enjoyed the sport because it came natural to him. “On Nov 6, 2022, we began attending Scent Work trials, which led to many overnight trips across the Southeast. Three short years later, on Sep 14, 2025, we obtained our Scent Work Detective title at the Licking River Kennel Club in Ohio,” he said. “This year we visited 11 different states in the pursuit of the SWD title as well as competed in the first ever AKC Master Scent Work Championship Finals, making it to the final round.

“Max is 6 years old now and the journey and experiences we have shared opened up a new world for me that I never knew existed. I’ve heard about a dog’s purpose, but Max has brought purpose to my life and our love for one another has grown stronger thanks to the AKC.”

Congratulations also to this dog on earning the SWD title:

TRICK DOG

Trick Dog Elite Performer (TKE)

Ali Jai Kana TKE owned by Hunter Danielle Kana of Santa Fe, TX

In 2016, a small puppy wandered onto Hunter’s porch, unknowingly setting the foundation for her future. As her first dog to raise independently, Ali introduced Hunter to the challenges and rewards of understanding canine behavior on a deeper level.

At age 16, Hunter didn’t yet recognize how critical structure and mental engagement were for a dog like Ali. Despite early obedience and socialization, her complex needs required more intentional direction. After moving away for college, Hunter’s apartment was broken into. Ali’s protective instincts took over immediately – she stood her ground and safeguarded their home. “Her bravery was extraordinary, but the experience left her with a loss of confidence and trust that took time and patience to rebuild,” Hunter said.

Determined to help her heal, Hunter began working closely with trainers to reestablish trust and provide structured outlets for her energy. That process led them to the AKC Trick Dog program, which offered the perfect combination of focus, stimulation, and teamwork. What began as a confidence-building exercise evolved into a journey of growth for them both.

Between the ages of 7 and 9, Ali earned all five AKC Trick Dog Titles, ultimately achieving her Trick Dog Elite Performer at 9 ½ years old. On June 25, 2025, Ali returned to College Station, TX, to perform her routine for the very trainers who helped open these doors for her – a full-circle moment of pride and gratitude.

Today, Ali is a confident, joyful dog who approaches every day with enthusiasm. Her story is a testament to patience, consistency, and the belief that with trust and time, every dog can thrive.

Oakley Sebastian Crofoot TKE FITS owned by Pamela Crofoot of Frisco, TX

This handsome boy is Oakley, an 11-pound Yorkshire Terrier mix with a big spirit. His journey began at the Zoom Room, where he and Pamela discovered a whole new world. Before that first class, Oakley knew no commands, and Pamela hadn’t heard of AKC Trick titles.

With their trainers’ encouragement, they learned training wasn’t just skills — it was a bond. What started as a class became a passion, and Oakley found joy in tricks, agility, and scent work.

That teamwork led to his proudest accomplishment. In July 2025 he earned his AKC Trick Dog Elite Performer (TKE) title at Zoom Room in Plano, Texas. For his Elite routine, Oakley impressed with a variety of tricks, from classic basics to crowd-pleasers — even playing the piano and the guitar.

He later earned AKC Fit Dog Silver, celebrating his love of long walks with Pamela. Oakley also enjoys Barn Hunt, which brings out his natural instincts — complete with the cutest “tell” when he finds a rat.

Beyond training, Oakley keeps life just as entertaining. At home, they display a growing collection of rosettes, medals, and certificates — proof they may be a little obsessed with titles. He’s collected 10 (and counting) U.S. BARK Ranger badges, built a bow tie collection that would make any fashion icon jealous, and never tires of his beloved ball machine. Next up: the AKC Fetch Dog title and AKC Fit Dog Gold.

Known for his happy spirit and playful mischief, Oakley fills every day with joy. Life with Oakley is never boring — he makes sure of it.

Finnegan Of Rio Verde TKE VSWB owned by Tarah Schwartz of Scottsdale, AZ

Finn is a clever 10-year-old All American Dog who loves to show off his favorite tricks. A true ham at heart, he soaks up all the attention he can get. Now that he’s conquered his Elite Performer title, he’s following his nose into the world of Scent Work. At his core, Finn is a dog who knows how to enjoy life, balancing fun training sessions with his favorite pastime of finding the perfect nap spot.

Finn earned his TKE on July 21, 2025.

Peaches Dickson TKE owned by Anna Dickson of Butler, PA

Peaches, now 4 years old, “chose” Anna when she was a puppy. They bonded right away.

When she was about 7 months old, Peaches was traumatized after being attacked by a large dog. To provide socialization, Anna enrolled her in an obedience class at the Butler Dog Training Association. Peaches was fearful at first, but weekly Members Nights along with rally and obedience exercises helped her warm to the people and their dogs at the club.

Peaches earned her CGC and passed her Therapy Dog test on June 24, 2023. Then she started learning tricks and earning titles. She loves performing tricks during therapy visits to schools, assisted living facilities, summer camps for kids, and nursing homes. She also enjoys agility, rally, and has started scent work training. “She is a quick learner and loves everything we do together,” Anna said.

On June 13, 2025, Peaches earned her Elite Performer title at the Butler Dog Training Association by performing for a group of club members.

Zoie Grace CGC TKE VHMA owned by Diana & Ron Ithomitis of Spokane, WA

Zoie is highly trainable All American Dog with an abundance of energy that perfectly complements a family lifestyle. She also possesses the ability to relax and unwind when needed. Her training journey began with a solid foundation of reward-based training and positive reinforcement which proved to be very successful in teaching tricks.

Zoie quickly earned her titles, achieving her Elite Performer on Aug. 27, 2025, through video submission. She is 20 months old and is now aiming for her first AKC Agility title! Zoie’s remarkable journey from a spirited puppy to an Elite Performer is a testament to her intelligence and the effective training methods employed. With her boundless energy and equality important ability to relax, she is greatly loved by her active family!

Riley Titan Greenhill RN CA FCAT7 ACT2J RATN CGCA CGCU TKE ATT FITG FTN owned by Cassandra Greenhill of Oak Forest, IL

Riley Titan was 4 months old when he was rehomed to Cassandra during the summer of 2020. He became her college Emotional Support Animal at Aurora University at 6 months old and became a college dog during hybrid instruction.

At a young age, Riley was very food motivated, active, and eager to please – all favorable traits of a potential sport dog. Cassandra spent time teaching him how to open and close doors, retrieve leashes, and push accessibility door buttons in hopes he could be a potential service dog for her disability.

Although he never became a service dog, he became an excellent performer. He is a quick learner and enjoys having a job to do. When Cassandra graduated from college, they started trying different sports. They have been to CAT/Fast CAT, Agility, Rally, Barn Hunt, Scent Work, and Carting/Drafting events. “However, Riley likes the simplicity and creativity of doing tricks,” Cassandra said. “No stakes, or fancy ribbon, or nervous jitters from his handler. It’s just me, him, and our bond.”

Riley has won the TBS Stupid Pet Tricks online competition in 2024 and starred in a viral video from The Pet Collective earlier this year with more than 20,000 views. In the video, Riley uses a ruler as a catapult to launch a treat and catch it in midair.

Not only is Riley Cassandra’s first sport dog, but he is also her heart dog. They have traveled the country for sport and non-sport related adventures and he enjoys every minute. “He doesn’t care where or when. He just wants to be with his person and make her happy. I’m honored to be that person for him.”

Riley and Cassandra are also competing in the 2025 AKC Virtual Trick Dog Competition.

Rajah Weiller CGC TKE owned by Katheryn Weiller of Long Island City, NY

Katheryn adopted Rajah from Bideawee, a rescue in New York City. They initially got into trick training as a way to build his confidence, as he was very fearful when she first brought him home. Training has become not only a way to teach him skills but also a way for them to strengthen their bond. Over time, they have expanded into other activities, including barn hunt, agility, and dock diving.

His confidence and resilience have blossomed, and today he loves long walks in Central Park, exploring new places (he has visited nearly every state on the East Coast!), and then coming home to cuddle on the couch with his two cat “brothers.”

On Sept. 3, 2025, Rajah earned his TKE title through a small performance. This title is especially meaningful because it reflects how far he has come — from overcoming early challenges to mastering complex tricks that require focus, teamwork, and enthusiasm.

Looking ahead, Rajah and Katheryn plan to continue training and exploring new activities together. Whether it’s tricks, agility, or simply being a well-mannered companion on city walks, he approaches every challenge with heart. “Most of all, I’m proud of the bond we share and the joy he brings to everything we do together.”

Luna Priegel TKE owned by Kathy Priegel of Yorkville, IL

Luna was found as a stray wandering the streets in Indiana. She was picked up by animal control and eventually made her way to Anderson Humane Society in South Elgin, IL. Kathy found her profile on Adopt a Pet.

When she went to see her, the pup jumped into her arms, gave kisses and rolled over for belly rubs. Kathy loved her and adopted her on April 4, 2024, when she was about one year old, naming her Luna.

When Kathy first got her, Luna was sick with pneumonia. She was also fearful and had separation anxiety. When she recovered, they started one-on-one trick dog training with Terri Vaira at Fox Gem Dogs. Luna caught on right away. “It was like the classes were made for her,” Kathy said. She earned her first two titles in July 2024 and has now earned all her trick dog titles. They made a trick dog video titled “Luna Goes to Vegas” and entered it in the 2025 AKC Trick Dog National video competition.

Her Elite Performer title was earned on Sept. 4, 2025, at Fox Gem Dogs Training in Sheridan, IL. This was all achieved in approximately one and a half years. “We are so proud of her,” Kathy said. “She has become more confident and just an all-around wonderful little dog. She works hard and loves to train so I am sure this is just the beginning. We are anxious to see where her training will lead us next.”

Queen Of Stunts “Skippy” TKE VSWI owned by Astrid, Tanis, Cyrus, & Peter Rapoza of Warren, VT

In 2018 the Rapoza family received a text message with a photo from the Animal Rescue League of Boston. They had a coonhound-beagle mix with “their name written all over her.” The Rapoza family went with a leash to the shelter and returned home with Skippy.

“Our then-3-year-old daughter, Tanis, and Skippy had a special bond right from the start,” Astrid, Tanis’ mother, said. Skippy seemed unsure of herself but started to gain trust and showed her sweet and sparkly personality.

Seven years fast forward, Skippy and Tanis have achieved the Elite Performer Trick Dog Title together, earned two Scent Work titles and completed several group event walks and runs. They were excited to win Junior Placement Trophies in the National Trick Dog Competition in 2023 and 2024. They started with remote trick dog training lessons, practiced regularly, wrote stories and worked together as a true team. The fun was audible by Tanis’ voice and laughter and the excitement about training in Skippy palpable.

Both Skippy and Tanis have benefitted so much in training skills and confidence from the program. When not training or looking for turkeys, Skippy can be found sleeping in cozy spots, sunning on the porch or snuggling with her humans in bed or on the couch. “We believe Skippy’s message to the world would be to not overlook the shy dogs in need of a home,” Astrid said. “Our family and home would not be the same without her.”

Skippy and Tanis submitted their 2025 National Trick Dog Competition entry and look forward to lots more learning and adventures together!

Bridges’ Buster TKE owned by Denise Bridges of Plano, TX

The universe aligned Buster and Denise in January 2020 when she was at her vet’s office with another of her dogs. She heard commotion outside the examining room and was told a woman had just left a puppy there to be euthanized, because he was aggressive.

In watching his behavior, no one agreed with this, so a vet tech took him home for assessment and kept Denise updated. Denise has a very active lifestyle with and without her dogs, so her only requirement was that he was NOT a couch potato.

“Oh, boy, be careful what you wish for!” Denise said. One week later, ‘Henry’ became ‘Buster’ and he was a perfect fit for her family with two other dogs and a cat.

Soon after, Covid hit, so she was unable to take him to her normal training facility for classes, as she had been planning. “I had to do something, so we began working basic behaviors at home.” Denise quickly discovered that Buster loved to learn, and shaping new behaviors with him was very easy.

Recently a new training facility that offered Tricks classes opened nearby. Denise had never trained a dog to do tricks but she decided to give it a shot with Buster, “since he loved to show off!” They started with simple tricks, but he learned so quickly they soon progressed through all of the AKC Trick titles. He welcomes trying anything new, so when we brought out various toys to work with, it was easy to see he favored the moving sports toys, like the skateboard, soccer ball, and basketball.

Buster and Denise completed their AKC TKE title on Sept. 9, 2025, at Zoom Room Plano, with a sports story and theme. “Thus was born Buster, the All Star Athlete.”

Croissant De La Famille Hyena TKE owned by Raiin Yan Yi Cheung of Singapore, SING

Croissant is a 5-year-old Japanese Spitz from Singapore with a big personality and an even bigger love for food, earning him the nickname “hungry hyena” online. Born during the COVID-19 pandemic, he quickly became the center of daily life and the little shadow that brought constant comfort and joy.

His food motivation quickly proved more than a quirk—it became the key to learning tricks. Starting with simple tricks for treats, Croissant soon built an impressive repertoire, even stringing them together — sometimes during dog yoga stretches, other times in playful little dances.

His enthusiasm inspired us to pursue the AKC Trick Dog program, where he progressed through each level with growing confidence. Living in Singapore, Croissant completed all his testing virtually, submitting videos to his evaluator, Ronda, who was always helpful in making the process smooth.

On Sept. 22, 2025, Croissant proudly earned the AKC Elite Performer Trick Dog Title, the highest recognition in the program. This achievement reflects his talent, determination, and the special bond he and Raiin have built along the way.

Today, Croissant is more than a trick dog — he’s a performer, a foodie, and a reminder that patience, teamwork, and the right motivation can bring out the very best in any dog.

Its Coming In At Light Speed RN NAJ NF BCAT ACT1 ACT2J CGC STR TKE VHMA VHMP VSWI FITG owned by Ruth & Tony Sheller of Mount Airy, MD

Jiffy, 2 years old and 11 pounds, lives in central Maryland with her owners Ruth and Tony Sheller, and their other sport dog Piper. She started learning tricks as a young puppy, competed in an International Trick Dog competition last year, and this September earned her Elite Performer Trick Dog title.

Trick training has been more than just fun for Jiffy — it’s been the foundation for her confidence, and a gateway to success in other sports. The problem-solving, focus, body-awareness and enthusiasm that trick work develops have carried over into her other favorite activities: rally, agility, Fast CAT, and dock diving.

Trick training builds a wonderful bond; it’s all about communication, creativity, and celebrating small wins. Ruth teaches tricks at My K9 Buddy in Westminster MD, and Jiffy often sits in on the classes.

Jiffy loves to entertain with her new-found confidence; she will often volunteer a spin, sit pretty or find something to press with her nose. “We call her ‘fun-size’ as she is our first small dog, and she has a lot to offer,” Ruth said. “Her energy is boundless, and she is up for most activities.”

When she isn’t competing, Jiffy loves country walks with her friends, swimming, playing ball and stalking the squirrels in the yard.

Congratulations also to these dogs on earning the TKE title:
