AGILITY

Agility Grand Champion (AGCH)

Congratulations to these dogs who have earned the AGCH title:

AGCH PACH4 Chinnici’s Lucia MXP11 MXPC PDSP MJP10 MJPC PJSP PAX4 MFPG TQXP T2BP5 owned by Lori Chinnici of Shelby Township, MI

Lucy is a 9-year-old All American rescue adopted by Lori when she was 8 weeks old.

“She started her agility career when she was 15 months old and has never looked back,” Lori said. They have been to the NAC in Tulsa twice and competed in this year’s AKC National Agility Championship in Ocala, FL.

“Although the titles are wonderful, it’s all about playing the game together. She is the best agility partner I could ask for and is a joy to run.”

Lucy earned her AGCH on Jan. 21,2022, at the Oakland County Kennel Club Trial in Lapeer MI.

AGCH MACH4 PACH Riley’s Jesse MXC PAD MJC PJS MXP5 MXPS MJP4 MJPB PAX MFS TQX MFP T2B4 T2BP FCAT CGC TKA owned by Carol Riley of San Antonio, TX

Jesse is a Border Collie-mix rescue. On the way to earning his AGCH, he has earned his Canine Good Citizen, Advanced Trick Dog, and Fast CAT FCAT titles.

“But his first love is agility. When he’s not in the agility ring, he’s working the crowd for treats and giving love to anyone who’ll let him. He also likes long walks, hiking, swimming, and any other activity that involves running, playing, or treats,” Carol said.

He competed in the 2019, 2020 and 2021 AKC National Agility Championships, and qualified for the 2022 NAC. He earned the AKC Agility Grand Champion title at the Capitol Dog Training Club of Austin trial on Jan. 29, 2022.

“Jesse is an awesome teammate, and a constant source of fun, love, joy and adventure.”

AGCH MACH3 Piper Pie Swanson MXC PDS MJB2 PJD MFG TQX T2B5 DCAT owned by Diane Swanson of San Antonio, TX

In January 2017, Diane and her boyfriend Dave fell in love with a photo of a dog called Violet. Here’s what they knew: Violet’s latest foster was in over her head. They agreed to foster the dog and took her in when they found that she would get along with their cats. They gave her a new name: Piper.

Soon, Diane and Dave realized Piper knew very little about being a dog. She didn’t know what treats were, how to go on a walk, to navigate stairs, or to play.

“I hope you don’t think Piper will ever be an agility dog,” Dave told Diane. Dave has 31 years of dog training and evaluation experience working for the federal government, so his opinion mattered.

But the couple didn’t give up. Thanks to their training methods, Piper was doing a 10-obstacle agility course in the backyard just one month later.

Diane credits agility with giving Piper the confidence and socialization she needed. “And it’s a great outlet for her energy,” Diane said.

When they began, Diane never imagined Piper would trial, let alone compete in the AKC National Agility Championship. “I started collecting Q and first place ribbons, and then you find out you are addicted.”

On the final day of the 2021 AKC National Agility Championship, Diane learned that she and Piper had qualified for the finals in the competitive 20″ class. The group was stacked with 21 other dogs, mostly Border Collies, so qualifying alone was a huge accomplishment. But the success got even sweeter — Piper ran a clean run and came in eighth place.

Also last year, she broke 27 mph in Fast CAT, setting a personal record two days in a row after running agility each day.

On Jan. 31, 2022, Piper earned her AGCH at the Bell County Expo Center in Belton, TX.

MACH He Shoots, He Scores RN MX MXS MXJ MJS MFB T2B SWM owned by Teresa Rodney of Fountain Valley, CA

“Score is an extremely high drive dog and is well known for the rivers of spit and drool he leaves flying behind him,” Teresa said. “His main loves are agility and scent work. He is aptly named as he absolutely loves watching sports on TV, especially hockey when the announcer yells out his name, ‘SCOOOOORE!’ At home, he is a very sweet, loving dog who loves to cuddle. He has a superb temperament and amazing work ethic.”

Score earned the SWM title on Jan. 15, 2022, at the Scent Work Club of the San Gabriel Foothills trial and then his MACH on Mar. 18, 2022, at the Greater LA Golden Retriever Club trial.

MACH Lady Whimsington MXB MJS MXF T2B owned by Bonnie Pruett of Fleming Island, FL

Whimsy was born outside under a front porch and spent her first eight weeks of life there with her mom and littermates. They were rescued by a friend of Bonnie, and she adopted Whimsy shortly after.

“Whimsy has struggled with fears of people (especially men), noises, the table and teeter, and performing the weaves in public. She has overcome so much and been so brave in spite of these fears. She earned her MACH with three QQs in a row under two male judges! Agility has given her confidence, and I am so proud of her achievement!” Bonnie said.

MACH Mister Tedley MXB MJB MXF T2B ACT2 owned by Kathy Crain of Madison, AL

Teddy and Kathy were leaving manners class one night at the Huntsville Obedience Club when Kathy noticed an agility class practicing.

It looked like they were having a great time and she thought, “I want to try that with my dog.” Teddy is very shy and a little leery of other dogs and strangers, so she was sure that she would never be able to enter him in any trials. But they could still do agility to have fun, be around other dogs, and meet new people.

So, she enrolled in the club’s agility pre-foundations class. They liked it so much that they continued with the other agility classes that were offered.

“Before I realized it, I was hooked and started buying equipment so Teddy and I could practice at home. Over the next two years we took more classes, I bought more equipment, and the back yard slowly became an agility field,” Kathy said.

Eventually she began to wonder how this timid boy would do in an actual trial. Could he handle the stress of being in a trial environment? Finally, in July 2020, when he was 4 years old, she “succumbed to the inevitable and entered him in his first agility trial. He was a little nervous but once he took the first obstacle, he had an awesome run. He proceeded to show me that the only thing holding him back was me! He had proved he was ready to trial, so to trials we went.”

By December 2020, Teddy had earned his Novice and Open titles and by December 2021 he had his Excellent and Master titles and was just two Double Q’s short of his MACH.

“In January 2022 he got one of those, but we just could not seem to get the last one. Finally, the suspense ended on Feb. 11, 2022, and the timid dog I was 100% sure I would never be able to trial earned his first MACH at the Huntsville Obedience Training Club agility trial.”

MACH Malibu CDX RE MXB MJB OF TKN owned by Emily Scott of Saint Louis, MO

Malibu is Emily’s first dog, her Novice A dog, who introduced her to the world of dog sports. She got him from the animal shelter, where he had been passed over many times.

“He is such a fun-loving dog, who is so full of personality. He absolutely loves to do agility, and it is something we have so much fun doing together,” Emily said. “Achieving his MACH was not something I ever had in mind when we started this journey, but it is a title he has certainly become worthy of. Stepping to the start line with Malibu is such a joy and a privilege every time we get to play!”

MACH Ot Steel Blue Assassin MXB MJB T2B owned by Suzie & Keith Highley of Riverton, UT

“Stunningly beautiful, like a porcelain doll, Steel came into my life on a stormy night in April – the first, of all dates, in 2013. My agility journey with her has at times been one of the most difficult and frustrating processes I’ve experienced in dog training. But it has almost been the most rewarding,” Suzie said.

“Steel was easy to teach. She picked up skills quickly. However, once she successfully completed a skill, that was enough for her; she didn’t enjoy repeating things and was ready to move on to something else.”

“Our first competition experiences were frustrating – for both of us, I’m sure. Steel would run around in the ring, run out of the ring, or chase the occasional bird that called our local arena home. Oh, and did I mention that she loves water? Steel had zero compunction about leaving the ring for the cooling pool,” Suzie said.

With these early, humbling experiences, Suzie realized that they would have to work toward small goals. Taking one obstacle, then a few in a row. They were eventually able to complete portions of a course, and they started to become a team.

Their first clean run in AKC Agility came after three years of work. After that, although qualifying runs were not the goal, they started to come.

“And we eventually secured our MACH. I will always be especially proud of this accomplishment because it symbolizes all the time and effort spent learning a game, and a game my teammate came to enjoy doing with me. A lesson to all is to never give up!”

Congratulations also to these dogs who have earned their first MACH:

  • PACH2 Minewfie Scout Booth MXP8 MXPG MJP9 MJPG PAX2 T2BP3 CGC owned by David & Janice Booth of Dekalb, IL

Congratulations to these dogs for earning their first PACH titles:

PACH Delicate Dora Of Dark Leaf Road MX MXS MXJ MJS MXP6 MXPS MJP6 MJPS PAX2 owned by Genevieve Neale of Forest, VA

On a routine trip to spay a young dog, Dr. Genevieve Neale DVM found herself chosen by a shy little dog, Dora. Dora was found on the side of the road with her littermate, Dino, in a cardboard box. When Neale met the small puppy, she found a sweet soul with eyes only for her. After weeks of Genevieve convincing her husband, Dora came home.

“Little did she know her job would be to develop into a champion,” Neale said. “For the first two years Dora was terrified by men. She overcame her fears and so many social challenges to compete at a very high level in agility. Dora, the faithful constant companion, never needed to be leash trained or trained to come when called; she can always be found close to her mom.

“During her career, Dora was nearly perfect every run. She only once dropped a bar in competition…and rarely ran off course. Slow and steady she has been for years. Finally, in Lexington, VA, on Jan. 15, 2022, Dora achieved her PACH. This little side-of-the-road dog overcame so much. She is a true champion with the heart of a lion,” Genevieve said.

MACH PACH C-Lou’s Little Mo CD GN RI MXS MJB MXP3 MXPB MJP3 MJPB PAX MXF TQX T2B2 CGC owned by Cindy Hanisch of Lomira, WI

Chester and Cindy Hanisch compete in AKC Obedience and Agility trials often and have acquired many titles. Chester earned his PACH at age 9, on Jan. 30, 2022, at the Oshkosh Kennel Club.

“After three intense days of agility,” Cindy said, “he was tired, but on the final day he earned the last 17 points required to get his PACH.”

PACH Tuscan RN MX AXJ MXPB MJP3 MJPB PAX XF T2B T2BP SWN SIA CGC TKA owned by Kelly Hilzendager of Grand Forks, ND

In 2013, Kelly saw Tuscan on the Facebook feed of a local rescue and knew that she had to meet him. “It was love at first sight for me,” she said. “The house was full of dogs, and he was the only one who sat on the couch and just watched us like the little snob he is.”

The rescue thought he was about 6 months old at the time. Tuscan is an “incredibly smart and active” Miniature Pinscher mix who can usually be found wherever Kelly is. He competes in agility and has also done rally, trick dog, scent work, and therapy Dog.

“Tuscan believes he could do some modeling because he has never met a camera he didn’t like. He is often described as ‘extra’ because he likes to perform with flair in whatever he does. We started agility together just as a fun activity to burn off some energy and never dreamed of competing,” Kelly said. “Eventually we did, starting in 2015, and we were both hooked!”

He loves the sport so much that he made it to the NAC. “Tuscan earned his PACH on Feb. 12, 2022 in Ham Lake, MN, at the Miniature Pinscher Club’s trial, which seemed fitting. I’m grateful for every time that I step to the line with him and am hopeful for many more years together,” Kelly said.

PACH Palisadie’s Duchess Of Sheborgo FDC AX MXJ MXP4 MXPB MJP5 MJPS PAX OF MFP T2BP CGC TKI owned by Hilary Lefko of Washington, DC

Sadie earned her PACH at Level Up Dog Sports in Mechanicsville, VA, on Jan. 8, 2022, under Judge Alex Davis, who was also the judge for Sadie’s debut trial and first Q.

“PACH Sadie is a true All American, residing in Washington, DC…She rescued us in 2013 when she was around a year old. She has taken us on quite the journey – competing at big events like Westminster and NAC, and even finishing in the top five for her height at the US Open. Powered by snacks, PACH Sadie went from barely making time earlier in her career to finishing fourth on the Bad Dog Power Rankings. She’s a well-rounded lady and also competes in scent work and canicross. Her favorite things include snacks, swimming, snacks, sniffing, and snacks,” Hilary said.

UD

Fergus The Shadow Piercer UD PCDX BN GN GO VER RN owned by Deborah Antlitz of Matteson, IL

Fergus came into Deborah’s life while she was staying with family during a rough time, and his formal obedience training began when he was one year old. “He is a fast learner, highly expressive, with a gentle, brave, and stable temperament,” Deborah said.

He did have a few triggers, however, that she worked to defuse. The sound of large vehicle engines, the sounds of dogs in metal crates, the environment of industrial buildings, and the sight of men bearing clipboards would flip Fergus from calm and content to nearly petrified. I am grateful to trainers Sandy Heimberg, Joni Monnich, Heather Tannura, and Loree Bartlett for their guidance and assistance during our training journey. Along the way I have focused on Fergus’ emotions, learning the exercises, and overcoming distractions with joy and confidence. Utility obedience especially boosted his confidence.”

The go-out/directed jumping has become his favorite exercise. “One trial was held in an industrial style building next door to a large equipment company. A tractor engine started up during our directed jumping exercise. Fergus paused briefly, then turned his focus back to the far end of the ring and completed the exercise. It’s good to watch him make that proud choice: ‘I don’t have to react to that. I can refocus my attention and tune that out.’ We obtained our Utility title on Dec. 31, 2021, at the South Side Dog Training Club. Along the way we made good use of the optional and non-regular titling classes to build Fergus’ ring confidence. Now we are enjoying rally and have two legs toward the Advanced title.”

Whirley Whirlwind Wind Of Dorian UD BN GO VER RM RAE AX AXJ XF RATS TKI owned by Sue Kotlarek of Romulus, MI

One year ago, Whirley earned a High in Trial from the Novice B class, and on Feb. 11, 2022, this high achieving All American Dog continued her winning ways by finishing her Utility title.

Sue got Whirley in September 2019. She had been rescued from Hurricane Dorian in Florida where she was in a shelter at the time of the storm.

“They had to empty the shelters in case the hurricane hit and also, if the hurricane did not hit, there would be room for misplaced dogs. Michigan accepted 30 dogs. The Friends for Animals of Metro Detroit took in six of these, and that is where we met Whirley,” Sue said. “She came with the name of Whirlwind, and it fits her to a T! She is a natural at everything we do.”

Congratulations also to this dog for earning the UD title:

  • Kenzie Of Nevada UD RM CGC ATT owned by Barbara Bunner of Pahrump, NV

MACH He Shoots, He Scores RN MX MXS MXJ MJS MFB T2B SWM owned by Teresa Rodney of Fountain Valley, CA

“Score is an extremely high drive dog and is well known for the rivers of spit and drool he leaves flying behind him,” Teresa said. “His main loves are agility and scent work. Congratulations also to this dog for earning the SWM:

  • Amber Riekes SWM owned by Julie Riekes of Los Angeles, CA

TRICK DOG

TKE (Trick Dog Elite Performer)

Congratulations to these dogs for earning their Trick Dog Elite Performer titles:

Ammo Rhodes TKE owned by Laura Rhodes of Mulberry, FL

On April 1, 2020, Laura “fell in love with Ammo’s green eyes and dirty white paws: he was adorable.” Her veterinarian told her that Ammo has a condition called Color Dilution Alopecia, but she said, “I did not care; he made my heart melt.”

Laura’s husband surprised her with basic obedience training at Dog Sense Obedience in Lakeland, FL. There, Ammo had his first basic training class. On through levels 2 and 3, he did great. “When I realized he loved training (and treats) and how attentive he was, Debbi Snyder, the owner of Dog Sense, suggested I try tricks. Ammo amazed me at every tested AKC level to include the Elite Performer title when he performed ‘Ammo went to Hawaii.’”

He received his TKE title certificate on Dec. 11, 2021.

On Jan. 31, 2022, Ammo and Jennifer had the opportunity to be on Fox 13 – Good Day Tampa Bay, with other dogs from Dog Sense Obedience to demonstrate obedience and trick. “It was an exciting and fun event for all of us,” Laura said.

“I am very lucky to have Ammo. He gives non-stop kisses, loves to do tricks, loves to go fishing, and loves to cuddle or get on a lap. Thank you AKC for the ability to achieve recognition for Ammo’s hard work.”

Lnh’s Shot Of Fire FCAT ACT1 CGC TKE owned by Lindsey Hazlett of Mount Horeb, WI

“Heisman is a 5-year-old rescue who has spent the last year learning complex tricks and routines for the AKC Trick Dog program,” Lindsey said. He earned his Elite Performer title in December 2021 after performing a routine called “Heisman Solves a Murder.”

“We started with tricks just to give his brain something to do in between agility classes. He learned the basics and didn’t show any signs of wanting to stop, so we kept going! Heisman’s three favorite tricks are backing up into a handstand, play-growling on cue, and rebounds.”

When Heisman isn’t busy trick training, you can find him participating in flyball, Fast CAT, or Barn Hunt. He retired from agility in 2021. “Professional life aside, he also enjoys retrieving the squeaky ball, squirrel watching, late-night cuddles, chasing his new Border Collie sister, and spending time with his human grandparents.”

Oliver Moses Grant THD CGCA CGCU TKE owned by Dawn Pfluger of Machesney Park, IL

When she experienced some anxiety a few years ago, Dawn asked her doctor who suggested a dog might help. After an exhaustive search, she found Oliver. It was love at first sight. The first thing she did was to sign Oliver up for puppy school, where she learned about therapy dogs and the role they play in helping people recover from various issues. Oliver, who is 4 and very social, gave Dawn so much comfort that she wanted to share his gift with others.

Oliver earned certificates as a Canine Good Citizen, Advanced Canine Good Citizen, and the Urban Canine Good Citizen. In 2019 he and Dawn became a certified therapy team and now spend their free time visiting hospitals and schools.

They began doing tricks to add fun to their routine. “It has built our confidence so much,” Dawn said. In December 2021, they earned the Trick Dog Elite Performer title at the Forest City Dog Training Club. “Now we can incorporate a magic show into his therapy work or just impress our friends with a few cool tricks. Wherever we go, Oliver is sure to leave a smile on your face.”

Doodlebug Bear of Lands End BN RN FDC MXP MJP MFPB CGC TKE owned by Kimberly Pease of Fort Worth, TX

“Doodlebug Bear is the funniest, 60-pound dog you could ever imagine,” Kimberly said. “Seven years ago, my niece, a veterinarian, decided it was time for me to have a new dog, and she ‘had just the puppy for me!’ How could I refuse?”

“All she wants to do is love and be loved while loving. I have never met such a happy puppy… or such a trickster. Just when you think she is passing you her Frisbee, she quickly flips her head in the opposite direction so that it is just out of reach!” Kimberly said. “She will try anything and go anywhere with total abandon and she loves a new challenge, giving it her all to get it right.”

“She did well competing in agility but unfortunately, arthritis drove her to retirement. Now she prefers rally over obedience, tennis ball over frisbee, but learning new tricks tops them all! We filmed the routine in December 2021, and the title came in January 2022.”

Congratulations also to these dogs for adding the TKE to their names:

  • Sibian’s Chloe Bear NAP NFP CGC TKE owned by Jacklyn Thymian of Hancock, MN
