Dear Bailey

Dear Bailey,

I am searching for the dog that will fit our family, but how do I find out which breed of dog is right for us? My friend just got a purebred Lab puppy that she registered with AKC.

Dear Stephanie,

First of all, congratulations to your friend. By registering her new Labrador Retriever with the AKC, she and her dog have so much to look forward to! She can train with her dog to compete in agility, obedience, retriever trials, dog shows and many more exciting events!

You can too, once you find the right dog and register it with the AKC. Finding the right breed for your family will take some careful research, so please don't be in a hurry. Take your time, and be sure you make the best decision. Think about whether your family prefers a dog that is large or small, long-haired or smooth-coated, active or quiet, among many other characteristics! It's hard to tell what a puppy will be like when it grows up just by looking at it, unless, of course, it's a purebred puppy.

One of the great things about purebred dogs is that they are predictable. You can match the characteristics of a breed to what works best with your family.

Print the "My Ideal Dog" and "The Best Breed for You" worksheets in this issue of Kids' Corner, and explore the 150 AKC-recognized breeds on this page. Match up your ideal characteristics with the descriptions of the various breeds.

Thanks for your question, and good luck finding a great dog for your family. I can tell by your question that you will take the time and do the research needed to choose a breed that fits in well with your family's lifestyle, that you'll find a responsible breeder from whom to get the dog and that you'll be sure your parents register your new dog with the AKC!

I hope this response answers your question and will help other kids who read it too.

Your friend,

Bailey the Beagle
