Do you love art, dogs and winning prizes? Then we have great news!

The American Kennel Club is hosting an art contest for students in grades K-12. The top winner in each category will receive a $50 Amazon gift card. Artwork will be on display at the NC State fairgrounds at Responsible Dog Ownership Day on September 28, 2019. Admission is free, and all are welcome!

    The 17th annual AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Day (RDO) will be held at the N.C. State Fairgrounds in Raleigh, NC on Saturday, September 28th from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

    Dogs and their owners are invited to come enjoy a free day of demonstrations, giveaways, games, Meet the Breeds and more. Hundreds of area dogs and their owners will get a chance to try out a mini agility course at AKC’s My Dog Can Do That! and achieve the AKC Canine Good Citizen title.

    Admission is FREE.

    Who can enter the contest?

    The AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Art Contest is open to all legal residents of North Carolina, who are enrolled in school (or homeschooled) and are in grades K-12.

    When are entries due?

    Entries are accepted beginning on August 1, 2019. All entries must be postmarked by September 6, 2019.

    Can I turn in my art work after September 6?

    Unfortunately, no late entries will be accepted.

    What type of art will be accepted?

    Art must be created on a 8.5″ x 11″ piece of paper. The picture can be created using drawing, painting, mixed media, or digital art. The art must be an orginal picture (not copied from somewhere or someone else) and must be created by you. It cannot have been submitted to another contest or promotion.

    Is there a theme?

    Yes. The art should be based on the theme of responsible dog ownership.

    Where do I send my art?

    The art and entry form signed by a parent/legal guardian can be mailed to:

    How will the art be judged?

    The entries will be split into three grade level categories: K-5, 6-8, and 9-12.

    Entries will be judged on creativity (40%), fit to responsible dog ownership theme (30%), and quality of picture (30%).

    Each entry will be assigned a score based on the above criteria. The ten pictures from each grade level category with the highest scores will be finalists and will be displayed at the Flagship AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Day on September 28, 2019 at the N.C. State Fairgrounds.

    The top scoring picture from each grade level category will be deemed the winner.

    What is the prize?

    All finalists and winners will have their art displayed at the Flagship AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Day on September 28, 2019 at the N.C. State Fairgrounds.

    All finalists will receive a ribbon. All winners will receive a ribbon, pencil and a $50 Amazon gift card.

    How will I find out if I am a finalist/winner?

    On or about September 12, 2019, AKC will send an email to the parent/legal guardian of the finalists and winners, notifying them. AKC will use the email address provided on the entry form. Each parent must acknowledge the message within 48 hours.
