The AKC Public Education Department is pleased to announce the second annual AKC National Championship Art Contest.

  • About the Contest +

    Who: This contest is open to all K-12 students residing in Orange County, Florida. Contest divisions are grades K-5, grades 6-8 and grades 9-12.

    What: The theme of the contest is “dogs.” Students should create art on an 8.5″ x 11″ paper (not canvas) that depicts a dog through drawing, painting, digital art or mixed media. Your artwork will be judged on its creativity, how well it fits into the theme and the quality of the picture. Please note: Artwork smaller or larger than 8.5″ x 11″ cannot be accepted.

    When: Entries must be postmarked by November 23, 2018.

    Prize: The top winner in each category (K-5, 6-8 and 9-12) will receive a ribbon, an AKC pencil and a $50 Amazon gift card. All 75 finalists will receive a ribbon, two tickets to the AKC National Championship on December 15 OR 16, and will have their artwork displayed at the 2018 AKC National Championship. This event takes place at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida on December 15 and 16, 2018.

    Participants and their parent/guardian should read and review the official rules. All art must be submitted with an entry from that is signed by a parent/guardian. Students that are 18 years or older should sign the entry form themselves.

  • About the AKC National Championship +

    The largest dog show in the United States and the only show hosted by the American Kennel Club, the AKC National Championship presented by Royal Canin is considered one of the world’s premiere dog events. The National Championship is held in conjunction with the AKC Agility Invitational, the AKC Obedience Classic, the National Owner- Handled Series finals, AKC Meet the Breeds® and Juniors competition in Conformation, Agility, Obedience and Rally®, and showcases more than 5,000 of the top national and international canine athletes.

    Who can enter the contest?

    All K-12 students who reside in Orange County, Florida. The contest is open to students that attend public schools, private schools, charter schools and home-schooled students.

    How do you judge the art?

    The art is divided into three grade level categories: K-5, 6-8 and 9-12. The art is judged based on creativity (40%), fit to contest theme (30%) and quality of the picture (30%). The 25 highest scoring pieces from each grade level category will be considered finalists. The highest scoring finalist in each grade level category will be the grand prize winner.

    When are entries due?

    Entries must be postmarked by November 23, 2018.

    What size paper can I use?

    8.5″ x 11″ paper must be used. Entries that are larger, smaller or not on paper (i.e. canvas, posters, etc.) cannot be accepted.

    What type of mediums can I use?

    Drawing, painting, digital art and mixed media are accepted mediums for this contest.

    How do I submit my art?

    Can I submit more than one entry?

    No. Only one entry may be submitted.

    Will I receive my artwork back?

    You should not expect to have your artwork returned.

    When will I know if I win and how will I be notified?

    On or about December 5, 2018, the Sponsor will send via e-mail a notification to the parent/guardian of the finalists and category winners.

    What is the prize?

    Seventy-five finalists (25 from each grade level division) will receive a ribbon and two tickets to the AKC National Championship.

    Three winners (one from each grade level category) will receive a ribbon, two tickets to the AKC National Championship, and AKC pencil and a $50 Amazon gift card.

    How will I get my prize?

    Prizes will be mailed within 4-6 weeks after the end of the contest.

    Where will my art be displayed?

    The artwork chosen as a finalist or winner will be displayed at the 2018 AKC National Championship. This event takes place at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida on December 15 and 16, 2018.

    Can I come see the art?

    Absolutely! Everyone is welcome to attend the 2018 AKC National Championship.
