Bulldog in a scent work trial.

AKC Scent Work was introduced as a new sport in 2017.

AKC Scent Work is a sport that mimics the task of working detection dogs to locate a scent and communicate to the handler that the scent has been found. Real-life detection dogs are trained to search for a variety of things–drugs, explosives, human remains, currency, other contraband, living humans (such as for Search and Rescue), and much more.

AKC Scent Work takes this amazing working relationship and turns it into a fun game that any dog can play.

  • First Steps +

Getting your dog to recognize a certain scent within a container is a great first step to training for the sport. Using a treat or your dog’s favorite snack excites them to find it.

For AKC Canine and Me, you will create a video that demonstrates that your dog can find the hidden “food” and alert you that they have found it. Dogs can alert you by sitting, pointing/touching with their nose, bark or paw at the object.  Note: if you are interested in competing in the sport of Scent Work you will have to train your dog to detect the odors that are part of the sport of Scent Work. More information on those oils (target odors) can be found here: Getting Started in Scent Work
