American Kennel Club Honors Black Hills Dog Training Club With a Community Achievement Award
The American Kennel Club® (AKC®) announced recently that Black Hills Dog Training Club (BHDTC) of Rapid City, South Dakota has been named a recipient of the AKC Community Achievement Award for hosting an exceptional AKC Responsible Dog Ownership (RDO) Day event. BHDTC received one of three awards for the fourth quarter of 2010 – Lake Cumberland Kennel Club of Somerset, Kentucky and Northeastern Maryland Kennel Club of Abingdon, Maryland also received recognition.
The AKC Community Achievement Awards support and recognize outstanding public education and legislation efforts of AKC-affiliated clubs, AKC-recognized federations and their members. The AKC selects award recipients who promote purebred dogs and responsible dog ownership within their communities or who have successfully introduced, monitored and responded to legislative issues affecting dog ownership.
BHDTC, in partnership with Region 4H Dog Project, hosted their annual AKC RDO Day on September 26 in Rapid City. Their “Join the Fun” advertising campaign was extremely effective, as most participants were drawn to the event by ads in the local newspapers, radio and television, or the event banners. The day kicked off with an Executive Proclamation from the Mayor of Rapid City proclaiming the week of September 26th AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Week. One of the main goals of this year’s event was to expand their education opportunities. BHDTC fulfilled this goal by recruiting local veterinarians and vet technicians to man an “Ask a Vet” booth. The booth featured hands-on training in all sorts of areas including proper grooming techniques for different kinds of dog coats. There were also agility demonstrations and AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy and AKC Canine Good Citizen® testing. Another goal was to reach more children, which was met by holding a coloring contest using AKC’s Bailey’s Purebred Dogs coloring book. The winners of the contest received four free annual memberships for Region 4H Dog Project training programs.
“BHDTC provided so many incentives for the community to come to their event. Their eye-catching advertisements along with plentiful opportunities for hands-on fun were very effective ways to reach and educate the public,” said Lisa Peterson, AKC’s Director of Communications. “The club did a wonderful job, and we are pleased to award them a Community Achievement Award.”

Lake Cumberland Kennel Club hosted “Dog House Art & Auction“ from September 18-30 featuring 17 one of a kind, whimsical dog houses created by ten adult artists and 23 high school students. The houses were offered for silent auction during the exhibition, and then offered at a live auction on the closing evening of the show, raising $2,000 to benefit dog rescue and AKC CAR Canine Support and Relief Fund. An educational table featuring AKC literature, responsible dog ownership material and information about getting involved in Lake Cumberland Kennel Club and AKC activities accompanied the exhibit. Additionally, the club established a reading bookshelf about dogs and their care at the local Pulaski County Public Library during the month of September. Two of the dog houses now reside there, a reminder of the importance of responsible dog ownership to library patrons. Throughout the month, LCKC club placed eight feature stories in their local Commonwealth Journal about Dog House Art & Auction and AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Days.
“Lake Cumberland Kennel Club’s dog house project began a conversation in their community in a fun and casual way about the importance of responsible dog ownership, and raised funds for dogs that actually need homes at the same time,” said Lisa Peterson, AKC’s Director of Communications. “For that, we’re pleased to award them a 2010 Community Achievement Award and we thank them for their efforts.”

This year, the Northeastern Maryland Kennel Club went above and beyond to celebrate dogs and their responsible owners. Along with securing a proclamation by the State of Maryland’s Harford County Chief Executive David Craig declaring Sunday, September 26th Responsible Dog Ownership Day in Harford County Maryland, they also hosted a great Second Annual AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Days celebration. Held in the local Petsmart parking lot, the event kicked off with a prayer or “blessing” for dogs and their owners led by Reverend Ed Heydt, a retired pastor and breeder of Havanese. In addition to the 28 vendors, representatives from the Harford County Health Department and the Hartford County Animal Control were on hand to publicize World Rabies Day. Special events were held throughout the day including a demonstration from Chesapeake Search and Rescue, Obedience and Rally demonstrations, AKC Canine Good Citizen® evaluations, a fundraiser for the NEMKC Emergency Fund, an “Ask the Vet” section and a costume contest. The event also featured nearly 30 breeds for a Meet the Breeds exhibit. Even in the rain, the number of participants and vendors doubled from the year before.
“NEMKC’s dedication to making their AKC RDO day a fun, informative, and exciting event certainly paid off,” said Lisa Peterson, AKC’s Director of Communications. “Their wonderful event provided the community with all the information needed to be responsible dog owners. For that, we are proud to award them a 2010 Community Achievement Award.”
