NC Information: Budget Proposal Would Charge Sales Tax on Veterinary, Grooming, and Boarding Services

June 22, 2015

The North Carolina General Assembly is currently developing a state budget for the coming fiscal year.

A provision in the Senate version passed on June 18 would require that the general sales tax rate (currently 4.75%) be applied to gross receipts for a variety of services including grooming, boarding, training, veterinary services, or “providing other care for an animal.”

Versions of the state budget have been individually approved by the North Carolina House and Senate, but these versions are very different. The next step is for the bills to be sent to a conference committee where members of the House and Senate will negotiate a compromise measure in the coming weeks.  Members of the conference committee have not yet been named.

If you wish to comment on this portion of the Senate version of the budget, you may contact your North Carolina State Senator and State Representative.  Visit AKC’s Legislative Action Center and type your address in the “Find Your Elected Officials” box to find the contact information.

AKC will continue to follow this process and provide additional information as it becomes available.
