National Purebred Dog Day is May 1! What better way to celebrate than with puppies? The AKC Puppy Pack is a group of puppies we have followed on Instagram from birth through every first achievement. In honor of National Purebred Dog Day, we are looking back at some of our favorite moments from the Puppy Pack.

Nymeria the Bernese Mountain Dog

When we first met Nymeria the Bernese Mountain Dog, her eyes weren’t even open yet! Although she was tiny in our first post, one day she’ll grow up to be between 70 and 95 pounds. Bernese Mountain Dogs were bred to drove cattle and protect farm animals, and today, many compete in drafting and carting events to test their working ability. We wonder if Nymeria will compete in drafting!

Gideon the Ibizan Hound

Gideon claims he’s the bad boy of the Puppy Pack even though Ibizan Hounds are known for being family-oriented and polite! When Gideon was a puppy, all he did was eat, sleep, and hang out with his littermates. But now, this bad boy stays up past his bedtime and chooses when to listen with his big ears. In fact, Gideon had to undergo BAER (brainstem auditory evoked response) testing to make sure he can hear everything. Spoiler alert: he can and now he needs a new excuse to ignore his owner!

Stryker the Shih Tzu

When we were first introduced to Stryker, we learned his favorite place to take a nap is on a lap. And, like most Shih Tzus, he loves to cuddle and snuggle. Shih Tzu means lion, but Stryker will only grow to weigh between 9 and 16 pounds and won’t need a big backyard. He’s always living his best life and has grown a gorgeous coat with flowing locks! He had to master how to wear a bow to protect his eyes from being irritated.

Hazel the English Setter

When We first met Hazel, we couldn’t pick her out from the rest of the litter! Now she is growing and will soon be between 45 and 55 pounds because female English Setters are slightly smaller than their male counterparts. English Setters are sporting dogs known for their sweet temper and show-stopping good looks, and Hazel is no different! Her coat came in full of beautiful spots and freckles. Hazel was named after Hurricane Hazel and likes to take naps, eat snacks, and try to conquer hoop training.

Marzipan the French Bulldog

French Bulldogs are part of the non-sporting group, but Marzipan makes a sport out of being cute and having fun! She has a closet full of princess clothes and was recently officially registered with the American Kennel Club.  Like other French Bulldogs, she’ll stay under 28 pounds and is a playful, alert, and irresistible pup.

When she was just a pup, Marzipan hung out with her nine littermates. But unlike the other Puppy Pack pups, Marzipan is the only one not to stay with her breeder! She was acquired by a loving family in California.

Smidge the Russell Terrier

Smidge will grow to weigh between 9 and 15 pounds. Russell Terriers were developed in England for fox hunts and would ride in saddlebags because of their small size and inquisitive personality. While Smidge doesn’t hunt foxes, her dream sport is Barn Hunt! “Rat catchers” rid farms of vermin and require hunting and teamwork skills. But for now, she likes to hang out with her cousins and help keep their faces clean.

Ryder the Australian Shepherd

Australian Shepherds were bred to be “the cowboy’s herding dog of choice,” and Ryder started taking on that responsibility early by practicing on his stuffed toys. He didn’t stop there — after about six weeks of training, Ryder became a S.T.A.R. Puppy! Like most Australian Shepherds, Ryder is a loyal and brainy companion who is always ready to work.
