The Beauceron is the largest of the French sheepdogs. Though almost unknown outside of France, this breed has a long history. Beaucerons were primarily used to drive and protect their herd, guard the house, and defend the family. These dogs are incredibly versatile, intelligent, and obedient. Not only do they make ideal dogs for search and rescue, military work, and handicapped assistance, the Beauceron makes a wonderful and entertaining family companion. Here are 10 things only their owners will understand.
- The never ending questions about what kind of dog you have.
No this is not a Doberman, or a Rottweiler, or a Shepherd-mix of any kind. My dog is a Beauceron, its pronounced (BOW-CER-ON). A What?! After the hundredth time, you tend to give up and might as well just call him a French Shepherd.
- Shopping for Beauceron stuff is IMPOSSIBLE.
Having a unique breed is awesome…except when you go to a pet store and try to find stuff that says Beauceron on it. There is never anything with your breed name. Retrievers, Spaniels, Terriers, all here, but no Beauceron stuff in sight. Better luck next time.
- When you’re at home, you have ZERO personal space.

A Beauceron is simply tending to their flock, and waiting for you to finish your shower is part of their job.
- Sometimes your Beauceron thinks he’s a “lap dog.”
90 pounds? No problem. Despite their large size, these dogs are more than happy to climb on your lap and use you like a pillow. In their minds, they see themselves as a furry 10-pound baby.
- A bored Beauceron is a naughty Beauceron.

Paper products are prized treats in any Beauceron household. It’s amazing to see any tissue box still standing. Small victories people.
- Sometimes playtime can get a little rough…
Beaucerons have a lot of energy, and love to play. Whether it is with other dogs or their owners, they are always ready to rumble. However, sometimes they can get a little TOO excited about that tug-o-war game and pull you over. These dogs are STRONG so when they get riled up, best to move out of their way.
- You know the meaning of “BOUNCERON.”

- “Are you going to remove those extra toes?”
Photo: GCH De Joie Du Chateau Rocheron on Facebook Ah, one of the most common questions we get asked. No, I will not remove those extra toes, thank you. Unlike some breeds, Beaucerons actually NEED that sixth toe to better perform at their jobs.
- You have had moments where you wonder “Do I own a dog? Or a land shark?”
Young Beaucerons are mouthy. You can give them a toy, but sometimes they would rather teeth on your fingers.
- Owning a Beauceron is the best decision you ever made.
Sure they might have destroyed a few of your favorite items, or turned your living room into their personal playpen. But at the end of the day you wouldn’t change a thing, because they are your best friend, and you couldn’t imagine your life without one.
