In the article “Why You Should Get the AKC Pet Insurance 30-Day Certificate” featured in the July issue, you heard a real-life story that demonstrated just how beneficial sending your puppies home with insurance can be in the event of an emergency.
Thankfully, emergency situations are few and far between; but as we all know, there are some common hiccups that can occur with a new puppy.
New, new, new
New food, new house, new yard, new furry friends: All of these things could potentially be cause for an unexpected visit to the veterinarian for a young puppy. In an effort to prepare new owners, responsible breeders educate their puppy buyers on common incidents and ailments that can occur as a puppy transitions into a new home.
Breeders can take one more step in creating preparedness by providing their puppy buyers with 30 days of pet insurance coverage. This coverage is a benefit to your puppy buyers at no additional cost when they complete their AKC registration.
Louis Lajos Pre (Lou) is a happy, energetic male Vizsla who benefited from his owners activating the 30-Day Certificate of Pet Insurance.
Lou lives with his owners in Brandon, MS, and was bred by an Alabama-based AKC Vizsla breeder, who encouraged Lou’s owners to register their new puppy with AKC. His new owners did just that and then took the next step and activated the 30-Day Certificate of Pet Insurance.
Unexpected Vet Visit
Lou was “wide open as a puppy— all the time, until bedtime,” his owners said. At five months old, Lou developed bumps all over his body.
It progressed fairly quickly, so like any responsible pet owners, they opted to take Lou to the vet. The veterinarian performed a thorough physical exam and ran diagnostic tests, including taking a sample from the pustules to look at under the microscope.
The vet determined that the bumps were most likely caused by an allergy to an unknown substance in his environment, possibly a type of plant. One of the veterinarian’s differentials was a common skin condition called pyoderma or “puppy pimples.” Lou was prescribed a two-week course of oral antibiotics and biweekly baths with a medicated shampoo for an extended period of time.
Every Little Bit Helps
Thankfully, Lou’s condition resolved fairly quickly and only required minimal treatment. Nevertheless, the vet bill was not insignificant. Lou’s owner said that they “were really glad they had [the certificate]” and it “made the decision to see the vet much easier.” The 30-Day Certificate reimbursed for Lou’s diagnostics, medications and medicated shampoo.
Today, Lou is a handsome 1 ½ year old dog. His owners report that Lou is “slowly becoming more chill, but still loves his early morning runs.” His owners decided that having the security of pet insurance was worth continuing and have since enrolled in a full-term policy.
The staff of AKC Pet Health Insurance is so glad that Lou has remained happy and healthy, and that it has the privilege of being his pet insurance provider.
