Taking Command May 2017

What’s New in GR – May 2017

This past month has been a very exciting and busy time for the GR team.

Legislative liaisons, leaders, and advocates from across the country traveled to Alexandria, VA, and Washington, DC, for our second regional legislative conference of the year. This successful event coincided with National Purebred Dog Day, which was celebrated on May 1st at the Capitol Visitor’s Center.   Members of Congress, staff, and guests had the opportunity to meet a number of purebred dogs, including Rumor, the German Shepherd Dog that won both Westminster and the AKC National Championship.  Additionally, the AKC presented the AKC K-9 Award to the United States Capitol Police K-9 unit.  The conference and National Purebred Dog Day events were a great opportunity for advocates to network and learn about new tools and resources to protect their rights as dog owners, and to celebrate all the ways that purebred dogs enhance our daily lives.

AKC GR continues to work with clubs, breeders, and advocates around the country on canine legislation issues, including a pet store bill that could impact all who seek to raise and breed dogs in California.  Be sure to check out all our legislative updates to see the latest information on legislation in Congress and your state and community.

We appreciate all those who are working so hard around the country on canine legislation issues.  You are such an invaluable part of this important fight.  Recently, we lost Peggy Wampold, a long-time ambassador and advocate for purebred dogs.  We will never forget her work and dedication, and look forward to continuing to fight in her state of Connecticut and across the country to protect the right to breed, raise, and show purebred dogs.

We are committed to continuing to partner with you in this important fight for our dogs and our sport, which includes several new AKC GR staff updates.  As always, if you have an issue in your state or local community, reach out to AKC GR and we will work with you to help you get the tools and resources you need.  Thank you for all your do on behalf of dogs, dog owners, and our sport!
