AKC Web Site Privacy Statement

At The American Kennel Club, we are committed to protecting your privacy. We use the information we collect about you on our Web site to process your orders, respond to information requests, provide a more personalized experience while you are browsing or shopping in our Online Store, and create a better experience for our Web site users. Please read on for more details about our Web site privacy policy.

What information do we collect? How do we use it?

An account is required for you to utilize certain services on our Web site, such as making purchases in our Online Store, using Your AKC, and donating to the AKC Reunite Canine Support and Relief Fund. When you create an account, we ask for personally identifiable information, that is, information which tells us specifically who you are. We need to know your name, mailing address, phone number, email address, credit card number and expiration date so that we can process and fulfill your purchase orders and notify you of your order status. We also ask for other non-personally identifiable information, such as whether you own an AKC registered dog. We use the information we collect to customize your experience and provide services and features that most likely meet your needs so that your use of our Web site is more enjoyable.

In addition to creating an account with us, we may ask you for personally identifiable information at other times, including when you sign up for email message groups and newsletters. We use this information to send you the email newsletters you request, to notify you of changes to our Web site, of new products in our Online Store and of other promotions.

We will ask you for personally identifiable information when you take out a subscription to our magazines. AKC uses a reputable third party service provider to collect your personally identifiable information to process and fulfill your subscription request. This third party service provider collects and stores this information in a secure, password-protected database. Your personally identifiable information will only be used by the third party service provider to process and fulfill your subscription request and other uses only as directed by AKC.

If you send us email, we may collect and store such information. We use the information to reply to your email communication.

We may also use the information we collect to occasionally notify you about important functionality changes to the Web site, new AKC services, and special offers we think you'll find valuable. If you would rather not receive this information, you may indicate your preference by updating your AKC account.

AKC uses a reputable third party to serve some of the advertisements that you see on the pages of our Web site. If you would like to know more about the information gathering practices and "opt-out" procedure of our third party ad server, please click here.

How does AKC protect customer information?

When you place orders or access account information, we use a secure server. We use secure socket layer (SSL) software to encrypt all information you input before it is sent to us. Further, all of the customer data we collect and store is protected against unauthorized access.

A "cookie" is a small data file stored by your browser on your computer's hard drive. Cookies contain a unique identifier which allows us to match your computer with the information we store for you in our database. Our cookies do not contain any personally identifying information, but they do enable us to personalize and enhance your experience with us. Some examples of ways we use cookies are: to save your account preferences so that you will not have to re-enter them the next time you visit our Web site; to store account names and passwords you create; to store items added to your shopping cart; to store previous inquiries you make on our Web site; to offer personalized services such as Your AKC. We also use cookies to alert you of new areas that we think might be of interest to you when you return to our Web site, record past activity at our Web site, analyze usage of our Web site, target advertisements, or customize Web page content, layout, and services.

Most Web browsers automatically accept cookies, but you can usually change your browser to prevent that. By accepting cookies from our Web site, you allow us to maintain the preferences stored in your AKC accounts and to utilize our online information services. If you choose not to accept cookies from our Web site, personalization and purchasing of online information are not possible from our Web site. However, if you choose not to accept cookies, you may be able to use other features of our Web site which do not involve personalization and making purchases.

In addition, some of your personally identifiable information is disclosed to third party service providers, vendors, or manufacturers when you order certain products or merchandise from our Online Store or subscribe to our magazines. Kids Privacy Policy

The AKC Web site is a general audience Web site. This policy applies only to information collected at AKC's Web site and not to information collected by the AKC through other means. The only instances in which the AKC knowingly collects information from children under thirteen are email to "Dear Bailey" and a request to receive the AKC Junior e-newsletter.

Junior e-newsletter

The AKC collects email addresses from children under thirteen in order to send them a Junior e-newsletter. In order to send the Junior e-newsletter the child's email address will be sent to a third party to process the request and send the newsletter. This third party is restricted by contract from using the email address for any other purpose other than sending the e-newsletter. Prior to sending the Junior e-newsletter to a child under thirteen, the AKC will contact the parent or legal guardian at the email address given to the AKC by the person requesting to receive the Junior e-newsletter. Parents or legal guardians may request to review the information that has been collected, find out how the information collected has been used, and, if you choose, prohibit us from making further use of your child's information and that your child's information be deleted. Additionally, if you request the deletion of the collected information it will also be deleted by the third party.

Dear Bailey

"Dear Bailey" email connects your child with the American Kennel Club. If your child sends us an email with a question or comment or enters one of our contests, the American Kennel Club will respond using his or her email address. The AKC will not store that email for future communications and will not share it with any third parties. The American Kennel Club reserves the right to post an email submitted by a child on our Kids' Corner newsletter site. We will identify your child by first name, age and state only. If your child submits artwork, stories, comments or anything else to us which is posted at our site, he or she will be identified by first name, age and state.

You and your child's use of this site are conditioned on your having accepted these terms. You should check back at this policy frequently, since it is subject to change from time to time, and your continued use of the site is conditioned upon your acceptance of any modification hereto.
