Occasionally, a bitch may be leased to another party for the purposes of breeding. We must be notified in order for our records to reflect this transaction.
When a dog is leased to someone other than the registered owner, the following points apply:
- If the period of time covered by the lease encompasses both the date of
mating and the date of birth of the litter, the lessee will be considered
both the breeder and the litter owner. Only the lessee may apply to register
the litter. If the registered owner attempts to register the litter, the
application will be rejected.
- If the leasing period begins after the date of mating, but before the date
of birth, the lessee will be considered the litter owner. The dog's registered
owner will be considered the breeder.
- If the lease period only encompasses the date of mating, the lessee will
be considered the breeder. The registered owner will be the litter owner.
- If a bitch is leased at the time of mating and/or whelping, a "Lease
Notification" form must be sent to the AKC.
- Every lease must have a termination date, and both the effective date and
the termination date must be entered on the Lease Notification.
- All owners of the bitch, as well as all lessees, must sign the notification.
- Leases are not accepted for male dogs nor for the purpose of entering a
dog of either sex in dog shows or other AKC events. The right to exhibit
a dog cannot be transferred by the person who actually owns it.
- The fee to record a lease is $20.
- Completing only the Owner Information section of the Lease Notification form will not automatically make you a breeder/owner of any litter(s) produced during the lease period. If you are the current owner of the bitch being leased and wish to be listed as breeder/owner of any litter(s) produced during the lease period, your name must be listed in the Lessee Information section as well as the Owner Information section of the Lease Notification form.
