Dear Bailey

Dear Bailey,

My family is thinking about getting a new dog. We spend a lot of time outdoors. What breed do you think would be best for my family?

Sam

Dear Sam,

Thanks for writing. The best way to choose a dog is to learn all you can about the breeds you are interested in so you and your family can make an informed decision. You’re off to a great start in that you’re already thinking about how much your family likes to be outdoors and that you would like a dog that would enjoy that too. Now everyone in your family should discuss what other characteristics you are looking for in a dog. Here are some questions to start your discussion:
  • Do we want a puppy or an adult dog?
  • What size dog do we want?
  • Do we want a dog with a coat that requires extensive grooming, or more of a wash-and-wear dog?
  • Do we want an easily trained dog or a more independent breed?
  • Do we want an active breed or a more sedate breed?
  • Do we have ample space for a dog?
When your family considers getting a dog, remember that your decision will last a long time. (Keep in mind Beagles like me and many other breeds can live for up to 12 years or more!) Make sure you choose a breed that will fit into your family’s lifestyle now and for years to come.

Once you and your family have decided on the characteristics you are looking for in a dog, research which breeds match up to those characteristics. You can find information on 154 breeds recognized by the American Kennel Club on the AKC web site at www.akc.org. Every breed is assigned to one of seven groups based on the uses for which the breeds were originally developed. You may also consider visiting an all-breed dog show to see the breeds up close. Visit the AKC web site at http://www.akc.org/events/search/ for a list of events in your area.

The AKC created lesson plans with activity sheets for educators to use in the classroom to teach responsible dog ownership. Click the links below for the activity sheets that can help you with your research.

Taking care of a dog or any pet is a serious responsibility and should not be entered into lightly.

Good luck.
