I descended from various old breeds of German herding and farm dogs. I am the world’s leading guard, police, and military dog. My courage, steadfast heart, and keen senses have endeared me to mankind. I am strong, agile, muscular, alert, and full of life. I am also noble and intelligent. I am a member of the Herding Group.

My work involves search and rescue for avalanche and earthquake victims, narcotics and bomb detection, tracking missing persons and guiding the blind. I helped search and rescue teams at the World Trade Center in New York. I am the symbol for America’s tribute to search and rescue dogs.

I am a wonderful companion. I enjoy fishing, swimming, boating, hiking, and other outdoor activities. I can live almost anywhere as long as I get exercise and attention.

My coat is harsh and medium length. I shed a lot, so I need to be brushed every other day, year round. My coat is usually tan with a black muzzle and a “saddle” over my back and sides.
