I am one of America's native breeds and was named after the New England city where I was first bred. I am the result of breeding the English Bulldog and a white English terrier during the late nineteenth century.

I am a member of the AKC Non-sporting group. I am lively, very friendly and highly intelligent. I enjoy lots of attention from my family, and I get along well with other pets. I am content to live in the city or the country. Even though I am small, I am also a good watchdog and will bark to let my family know if someone is at the door.

I am known as the "American gentleman" because of my calm disposition and formal black and white "tuxedo." I have white on my face, chest, front legs and feet. The rest of me should be black or a pattern called "brindle."
