Dear Ben,
Owning a dog is a big responsibility. There are many things to consider.
You're probably ready for a dog when everyone in your family wants a dog. It's hard for one person to assume all the responsibilities for a dog. Everyone needs to pitch in. Also, if anyone in the family has allergies, your parents will need to check with a doctor before getting a dog.
Make sure you have enough time to regularly walk, train, feed, exercise, play with, clean up after and care for your dog.
Make sure you have enough space for the breed of dog you want. If space is a factor in your decision, be sure you choose a breed that isn't going to be too big or too active for your space when he's fully grown.
Help your parents research costs that go along with dog ownership, and check to see if your family can afford the food, equipment (crate, water bowl, leash, etc.) and veterinary care, as well as the initial fee to buy the dog.
Once you've decided you're ready to own
a dog, then let AKC help you to find the breed of dog that's
best for you. We'll also help you find a responsible breeder.

We have some great worksheets that can help you and your family
estimate how much owning a dog will cost as well as help
you decide which breed would best fit in with your family
and lifestyle. You can find them by visiting here.
Good luck, and thanks for writing!
Yours truly,
Bailey
