Saber’s Stay Safe Advice

Saber and his owner Fleta Kirk visit schools and other youth organizations to give kids safety advice should they become lost.

If you get lost …

  1. Sit and stay.
As soon as you realize you’re lost, remain where you are. Somebody will come find you.

  2. Be loud.
Bang sticks on trees. Whistle, or blow a whistle if you have one. Make lots of noise.

  3. Make yourself big.
Try to get in a place out in the open, if conditions allow. Lie down and make like a snow angel. Scatter whatever you have in a backpack, such as books or toys. Or arrange rocks you can find in a big circle or “X” that someone might spot from a helicopter.

  4. Try to recognize who the good guys are.
Search and rescue workers will have radios and will know your name. They will be wearing something that says “Search and Rescue” and will usually be wearing something red or orange.
