Student copies of Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
Computer with internet access
Lesson
Introduction
- Review what students have read so far in Fahrenheit 451Farenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury.
- Explain that today students will be using details in the text to create a detailed illustration of the Mechanical Hound from Fahrenheit 451.
Explicit Instruction/Teacher Modeling
- Read the section that describes the Mechanical Hound aloud to students.
- Stop frequently to discuss unfamiliar words such as “capillary,” “proboscis” and “olfactory.”
- Make connections between the Mechanical Hound and a Dalmatian (what the Mechanical Hound once was).
Independent Working Time
- Have students complete the venn diagram that compares the Dalmatian to the Mechanical Hound.
- Students can find information about the Dalmatian here: Dalmatian
- Students should use their copy of the text to list details about the Mechanical Hound, looking for similarities and differences of the Dalmatian. (*partner lesson can be found on AKC website)
- Once students have a clear listing of the Mechanical Hound’s attributes, they should illustrate it, reflecting these details. They should also list at least three quotes that support the details they included.
Review and Closing
- Invite students to share their illustrations.
