AKC Breeds and Varieties List

As of January 1, 2009 there are 161 BREEDS with REGULAR STATUS that are eligible to compete for championship points at AKC shows. The most recent breeds to gain acceptance are the Irish Red & White Setter (Sporting Group), Pyrenean Shepherd (Herding) and Norwegian Buhund (Herding). On December 30, 2009 AKC will welcome the following breeds to regular status: Bluetick Coonhound, Boykin Spaniel, Redbone Coonhound. In addition, on July 1, 2010 AKC will welcome the Cane Corso, Icelandic Sheepdog and Leonberger which will increase the number of AKC breeds to 167.

A VARIETY is a division of a breed based on coat or color or size. There are nine breeds that are divided into varieties, making a total of 173 BREEDS AND VARIETIES with regular status.

There are 10 additional breeds that can compete in the MISCELLANEOUS CLASS as of January 1, 2009. The Miscellaneous Class is for FSS breeds that are working towards eventual recognition to Regular Status. Miscellaneous Class breeds include: Bluetick Coonhound, Boykin Spaniel, Cane Corso, Cesky Terrier, Entlebucher Mountain Dog, Icelandic Sheepdog, Leonberger, Norwegian Lundehund, Redbone Coonhound, Xoloitzcuintli

The AKC's Foundation Stock Service (FSS) is an optional recording service for purebred breeds that are not yet eligible for AKC registration. To be eligible for FSS, a breed must be recognized by an acceptable foreign or domestic registry. Presently, there are 64 FSS breeds.

Breeds enrolled in FSS may not compete at AKC conformation events where championship points are awarded, but may participate on a limited scale at the match level. Coonhound breeds in FSS are also eligible to compete in the AKC coonhound events. Some FSS breeds, which meet certain criteria, may compete in AKC Companion Events (Obedience, Tracking, and Agility). Requests for these breeds to compete in AKC Performance Events (Herding, Earthdog, Lure Coursing, and Hunting Tests) are considered on a case-by-case basis.
