Maryland Update: Senate Committee to Consider Banning BSL on April 1!

(Thursday, March 27, 2014)
The Maryland Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee will consider a measure on Tuesday, April 1, that would support responsible dog owners by prohibiting counties and municipalities from enacting laws that ban the ownership of specific breeds.

Those who reside or participate in events in Maryland are encouraged to contact the committee and consider attending the meeting to express support for House Bill 422. Scroll down for more information.

Summary:

House Bill 422This bill states that a dog may not be declared potentially dangerous based solely on the dog’s “breed, type or heritage” and prohibits counties and municipalities from enacting laws prohibiting ownership of specific breeds. It does not prohibit them, however, from enacting laws relating to dogs declared dangerous based on the definition in Maryland law (this definition is based on a dog’s actions). An amendment in the House removed a provision that applied the same requirements to landlords.

The AKC and Maryland Dog Federation both support this bill.
