The Dos and Don'ts of Enjoying the Beach with your Dog

(Monday, July 15, 2013)

Summer is in full swing, bringing with it plenty of opportunities to enjoy the beach. You can have fun beach days with your dog as long as you plan ahead and make sure your pup is taken care of. The American Kennel Club (AKC ®) offers the following dos and don'ts to help dog owners enjoy the beach with their four-legged friends.

  • DON'T let your dog drink ocean water. Drinking salt water is dangerous for your dog, as the excessive sodium can make them very sick. DO pack a portable water bowl and fresh water for your dog. You can also put ice cubes in your cooler as a frozen treat for him.
  • DO provide shade. Bring an umbrella with you if you’ll be staying at the beach for an extended period of time so your dog can have a place to rest and escape the sun.
  • DON'T forget your dog’s sunscreen. Hairless and light-skinned dogs have a high probability of getting sunburned. It’s wise to apply dog-safe sunscreen so your four-legged friend is protected.
  • DO rinse off. Salt and sand can irritate your dog’s coat, so be sure to rinse him off when he’s done playing.
