The American Kennel Club Gives Odds and Predicts NCAA Champion Based on Final Four Mascots

(Wednesday, March 30, 2011)

A Bulldog, a Siberian Husky, a Ram or a Wildcat. In celebration of the animal mascots in the NCAA Final Four – two of which are dogs – the American Kennel Club (AKC®) offers the following insight into the animals behind the mascots and provides odds to help predict the NCAA champion.

THE FINAL FOUR

University of Connecticut Huskies (4 to 1) v. the Kentucky Wildcats (8 to 1)

  • Siberian Huskies, the dogs that pull sleds in teams in the world famous Iditarod, are the ultimate team dog. They are known for their endurance and willingness to hustle.
  • Wildcats have long legs and long paws and have a leaping pounce that can go up to 10 feet.

AKC PICK: The Huskies. Basketball and the Final Four reward teamwork and Huskies know more about teamwork than solitary Wildcats.

Butler University Bulldogs (10 to 1) v. VCU Rams (1 million to 1)

  • Bulldogs are short and stout and were originally bred to be tenacious fighters. Not only is the Bulldog an extremely popular mascot (Yale, Georgetown, and Georgia are also represented by the Bulldog), but Bulldogs are the sixth most popular dog breed in the U.S. according to AKC registration statistics. Butler Blue II is also AKC registered.
  • Rams are known for their large curled horns, which they use to fight other male rams.

AKC PICK: The Bulldogs. Come on, we’re the American Kennel Club plus, a Ram is just a fancy name for an uncastrated male sheep.

THE FINAL

UConn Huskies v. Butler Bulldogs
The ultimate team dog vs. a tenacious dog that was bred to keep animals ten times their size at bay.

AKC PICK: It is clear that this year’s final four is the year of the ….. underdog and the American Kennel Club’s pick is that the Butler Bulldogs will harness up the bigger, but not badder, UConn Huskies.
