Highlights from the July 2008 Board Meeting

New York, NY – Highlights from the July 2008 meeting of the AKC Board of Directors are as follows:

  • The Board discussed the issue of a mixed-breed program and whether staff should continue to devote significant resources to its preparation of a plan.  There was a Board consensus not to move forward at this time.  Of the 606 member clubs, staff had received completed surveys from only 19.  All survey responses received, as well as any other communication about the subject, will be compiled and presented to the Board for consideration at its August meeting. 
  • The Treeing Walker Coonhound was approved as eligible to compete in the Miscellaneous Class at AKC shows, effective January 1, 2009.
  • The penalties for various rule infractions were increased to the following, effective immediately:
  • Chapter 2, Section 16 - Holding a sanctioned match without AKC-approval: Reprimand and up to $200 fine
  • Chapter 7, Section 8 - Failure to include a known judging change in the judging program: Reprimand and up to a $250 fine
  • Chapter 11, Section 14 – Discriminating among exhibitors: Reprimand and up to a $250 fine
  • Chapter 13, Sections 1 & 3 – Failure to comply with benching regulations: Reprimand and up to $250 fine with the fine subject to doubling for each subsequent offense.
  • The Finnish Lapphund is eligible to compete in Herding events, effective January 1, 2009.
  • AKC's Disciplinary Procedures have been amended to provide for the granting of a stay of suspension until the exhaustion of any available appeal. This is effective immediately.

  • Cathy Gaidos, Manhattan, KS, to represent Rubber City Kennel Club
  • Robette G. Johns, Oak Hills, CA, to represent California Collie Clan
  • Thomas S. Powers, Northridge, CA, to represent Kennel Club of Beverly Hills
  • Dr. Robert D. Smith, St. Stephens Church, VA, to represent Memphis Kennel Club
  • Holly S. Stump, Ipswich, MA, to represent Staffordshire Terrier Club of America
  • Christopher L. Sweetwood, to represent Trap Falls Kennel Club
  • Judith H. Tighe, Hoffman, NC, to represent American Brittany Club
  • Sharon Weston, Grants Pass, OR, to represent Southern Oregon Kennel Club
  • Ruth A. Williams, Upper Darby, PA, to represent Bryn Mawr Kennel Club
