New York, NY This spring, approximately 2,400 graduating veterinarians from 27 schools received a special edition of the AKC’s Complete Dog Book, the premier reference on purebred dogs, compliments of Hartz Mountain Corporation and AKC. Hartz is the official sponsor of the AKC Veterinary Outreach Program, which aims to provide resources that assist the veterinary profession in providing the best of care for dogs.
“As the sponsor of AKC’s Veterinary Outreach Program, Hartz brings tremendous value and support to this vital program,” said Dennis B. Sprung, President, AKC. “Together, we will bring a greater level of support to the veterinary professionals who share our appreciation of the role that dogs play in our lives, whether as a working dog or a household pet.”
Hartz has sponsored the AKC Veterinary Outreach Program since June 2004. In addition to offering the AKC Complete Dog Book to graduating veterinarians, Hartz has expanded veterinary school and conference visits and distributed co-branded AKC breed posters to veterinary schools and thousands of offices across the country.
“Veterinary professionals are an important link in the preservation and nurturing of the Human-Animal Bond,” noted Hartz President and CEO Robert Devine. “Hartz is committed to providing resources to help veterinarians, veterinary technicians and students support animals and the people who love them.”
Prior to its sponsorship of the AKC Veterinary Outreach Program, Hartz and AKC brought the “Help a Hero” toy series to market as a key element of AKC’s charitable public art program, DOGNY America’s Tribute to Search and Rescue Dogs. Proceeds from the toy series contributed more than $1 million to the AKC CAR Canine Support and Relief Fund to support professional and volunteer canine search and rescue organizations throughout the U.S.
“All members of the Class of 2005 of the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine received a copy of the AKC Complete Dog Book prior to graduation,” said Ashra Pearl Markowitz, Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine. “This is just one of the ways in which the AKC provides support for our students, and we are most grateful for its continuing support.”
The AKC Veterinary Outreach Program unites the world of purebred dogs with the veterinary community through educational initiatives aimed at veterinarians, veterinary students and veterinary technicians. The program provides resources in support of veterinary students, practitioners and researchers, providing a forum for the exchange of information about canine health and welfare, as well as scholarships for future practitioners and researchers.
