More than 1,600 of the nation’s top obedience, agility and AKC Rally® dogs will jump, heel and retrieve their way into Tulsa, Oklahoma for the first-ever Companion Events Extravaganza, hosted by the American Kennel Club® (AKC®) on March 15-17, 2013.
These talented canines will compete in the AKC National Agility Championship, AKC National Obedience Championship and the inaugural AKC Rally® National Competition during the three-day event.
“We’re pleased to welcome a record entry of top dogs to Tulsa for the AKC National Agility Championship,” said Carrie DeYoung, Director of Agility. “With the country’s most accomplished agility, obedience and rally competitors together, the Companion Events Extravaganza will showcase the abilities of all our companion dogs and what can be accomplished with training.”
“We’re excited to bring the National Obedience Championship and AKC Rally® National Competition to Tulsa for the first-ever Companion Events Extravaganza.,” said Pamela Manaton, Director of Obedience, Rally and Tracking. “The inaugural rally event will show off the sport of AKC Rally®, which is an excellent introduction to AKC Companion Events for new dogs and handlers and can provide a challenging opportunity for competitors in other events to strengthen their skills.”
EXTRAVAGANZA EVENTS AT A GLANCE
AKC National Agility Championship: 1,385 dogs, representing 104 breeds from 48 states and Canada, will compete for the title of National Agility Champion. Agility is the AKC’s fastest growing sport, and reached over one million entries in 2012. Dog and handlers must negotiate a timed obstacle course, off-leash, striving for a perfect score of 100.
The Championship consists of five rounds to be completed over Saturday and Sunday. After round five, the top dog in each jump height – 8”, 12”, 16”, 20”, 24” and 26” for the Regular classes and 4”, 8”, 12”, 16” and 20” for the Preferred classes – will win the title of National Agility Champion and Preferred National Agility Champion of 2013. AKC National Obedience Championship: 97 dogs, representing 36 breeds from 30 states and Canada will compete for the prestigious National Obedience Champion (NOC) title. The top obedience dogs in the country qualified based on OTCH points and placements at AKC Obedience Regional Events and will show off their skills at scent discrimination, retrieving, heeling, hand signals and more. Rally is a sport in which the dog and handler complete a course of stations, each containing a sign with instructions regarding a skill to be performed. Each team will run two unique rally courses at each level that have been designed by the judge and cumulative scores and times will be used to determine placements in each of the four classes.
