AKC Executive Field Representative Carol Hollands, who bred generations of Best in Show Pekingese, died of an apparent heart attack at her home in Enfield, Connecticut, on September 10. She was 61 years old.
Hollands, daughter of breeder-handler Horace Hollands, grew up in the sport of dogs and was mentored by the likes of Jerry Rigden, George Ward, R. William Taylor, and Nigel Aubrey-Jones. She exhibited her first Pekingese, Am./Can. Ch. St. Aubrey Maribeau of Elsdon, in 1964. Hollands also bred and exhibited English Setters, Irish Setters, and standard Poodles.
In 11 years as a field rep she passed along her wisdom with grace and good humor, endearing herself to fanciers everywhere.
“Showing dogs should be taken seriously, of course, but people shouldn’t take it so personally,” Hollands told the AKC GAZETTE in 1997. “We’re not doing brain surgery out there! It’s one judge’s opinion today. There will be another chance tomorrow.”
A memorial service for Hollands will be held in Sarnia, Ontario, Canada, for family and friends. The service will be at 11.00 a.m. on Friday, September 19, at the Smith Funeral Home, 1576 London Line (519-542-5541).
