TUNE IN TO THE TELEVISION PREMIERE OF THE AKC’S 125th ANNIVERSARY EDITION OF THE AKC/EUKANUBA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

— February 6th at 8 p.m. on
Animal Planet and Discovery Channel —

The American Kennel Club® and Eukanuba invite you to tune in for the ninth annual AKC/Eukanuba National Championship on Animal Planet and Discovery Channel Saturday, February 6, 2010 at 8 PM (ET/PT). This year’s show featured a number of special events in honor of the AKC’s 125th anniversary.

Nearly 4,000 of the world’s top dogs vied for honors in Long Beach, CA for a total of $225,000, including $50,000 to the Best in Show winner. Though the competitors are usually determined by an invitational system, the show was open to all exhibitors this year in honor of the AKC’s historic milestone.

The show also hosted the third annual Eukanuba World Challenge, an international competition featuring the top dogs from 41 countries and six continents. The highlights and the winning moment from the Eukanuba World Challenge will be included in the telecast.

“We are excited to share a very special edition of the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship with the public on Animal Planet,” said Michael Canalizo, Director of AKC Event Management. “Instead of the normal invitational format, we opened the show to all dogs – both the crème de la crème and newcomers striving to complete their championships – in honor of the American Kennel Club’s landmark anniversary. Viewers will have a chance to see every breed that competed, learn health and training tips, view special owner profiles of the top dogs and experience the excitement of the AKC’s special milestone from the comfort of their own homes.”

Hosted by noted TV personality Bob Goen with play–by–play commentary from renowned dog experts Edd Bivin and Gina DiNardo, viewers can watch the competition and learn about the world of dog shows, as well as more than 160 AKC–registered dog breeds.  Reporter Leanza Cornett will also contribute with special features throughout the broadcast.

The AKC/Eukanuba National Championship will repeat multiple times following the premiere. For more information, visit: http://www.animalplanet.com/akc and www.akc.org.
