“We sincerely thank Mayor McFarlane for showing her support of Raleigh dog owners and responsible dog ownership by proclaiming September 19th AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Day,” said Penny Leigh, AKC RDO Day chairwoman. “The AKC believes that every dog deserves a responsible, educated and respectful owner, and AKC RDO Day offers Raleigh dog owners the opportunity to learn about training, dog safety, dog sports and more, all while having a great time with their canine best friend.”
The American Kennel Club established AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Day in 2003 to promote all aspects of responsible dog ownership, including proper veterinary care, safety around children, obedience training and socialization, which are essential to a happy and healthy bond between a dog and his owner.
The AKC’s 136 dog clubs throughout North Carolina give back to their local communities through public education programs, dog training, and other community service. Year-round, the AKC sanctions nearly 400 educational and family-oriented dog shows throughout the state that promote responsible dog ownership and benefit local economies.
This year’s activities at the Raleigh event include AKC’s My Dog Can Do That! where attendees can try beginner agility with their dog; action-packed dog sport demos; face painting and activities for kids; microchipping from Wake County Animal Center for just $10; breed parades; local kennel clubs, rescue groups and vendors on-site; and more. The event is free and open to leashed, vaccinated dogs. The first 500 families to enter will receive a free goodie bag.
