The American Kennel Club® today announced that its Canine Good Citizen® (CGC) Program will be sponsored by K9 Advantix®, a product of Bayer HealthCare’s Animal Health Division.
Started in 1989, CGC is a certification program that is designed to reward dogs who have good manners at home and in the community. The two-part program stresses responsible pet ownership for owners and basic good manners for dogs. All dogs who pass the 10-step CGC test may receive a certificate from the American Kennel Club.
“Many dog owners choose CGC as the first step in training their dogs,” said Dr. Mary Burch, animal behavior expert and AKC’s CGC Director. “With the support of Bayer and the 30 state legislatures that have recognized the program, we are certain that CGC will continue to grow and become increasingly accepted as the gold standard in basic training.”

AKC’s Canine Good Citizen® (CGC) Program Sponsored by K9 Advantix® is one of the most rapidly growing programs in the American Kennel Club. The program is used by AKC clubs, police and animal control agencies, therapy dog groups, 4-H groups and veterinarians. State legislatures began recognizing the CGC program as a means of advocating responsible dog ownership and 30 states now have Canine Good Citizen resolutions.
Many other countries (including England, Australia, Japan, Hungary, Denmark, Sweden, Canada, and Finland) have developed CGC programs based on the AKC’s CGC Program.
