Highlights from the September 2012 meetings of the Delegates and AKC Board of Directors are as follows.

 

Full details on these actions, as well as other actions taken, are included in the minutes for the meeting, which are posted on the AKC website, within one week of the meeting.

 

Delegates Meeting

  • AKC announced that effective September 11, 2012, it will award Urban Search and Rescue Titles to dogs that are FEMA certified as deployable on FEMA task forces and to dogs that are certified by States as deployable on State task forces. The first such title was presented to Juno, a FEMA certified English Springer Spaniel owned and handled by Becky Stanevich, Delegate for the Mountaineer Kennel Club.

  • An amendment to Chapter 16, Section 1, of the Rules Applying to Dog Shows was adopted. Effective January 1, 2013, there will be a new three point major for the dog designated Reserve Winners Dog and Reserve Winners Bitch at one National Specialty each year, specified by the Parent Club, provided there are at least twice the number required for a five point major in the winner’s sex. The Parent Club would have the option of not providing the additional major.

  • Four Delegates were recognized for twenty-five years of service as a Delegate. They are:

    • Gretchen Bernardi – Mississippi Valley Kennel Club

    • Charles H. Schaefer – Kennel Club of Philadelphia

    • Robert S. Jaggers, Jr.  – Kern County Kennel Club

    • Harold W. Sundstrom – Collie Club of America

  • Four Clubs were honored for one hundred years as an AKC Member Club. They are:

    • American Foxhound Club

    • Bulldog Club of Philadelphia

    • Middlesex County Kennel Club

    • Pacific Coast Boston Terrier Club

 

Board Meeting

  • The Board voted to forward without recommendation, a Bylaw amendment proposed by the Delegate Advocacy and Advancement Committee to the Delegates for a read at the December 2012 Delegate Meeting for a vote in March 2013. If adopted, it would reduce the number of annual Delegate meetings to three, with an additional day of Delegate Committee meetings at two of those Delegate meetings.

  • The AKC established full reciprocity with the National General Kennel Club (NGKC) in China.

  • Effective January 1, 2013, eligible clubs will be permitted to hold up to twelve Agility Trials in a calendar year.
