As we all know, romance and marriage are fleeting in Hollywood.  One love affair that stays constant, however, is the one between celebrities and their dogs and or cats.

  • Long time dog lover Paul McCartney owned an Old English Sheepdog named Martha in the sixties with his first wife Linda.  It doesn’t look like Martha wouldn’t have faired so well if she had been alive to witness Paul’s marriage (and divorce) to Heather Mills.  According to published reports, a backyard fireworks display put on by Heather, scared her neighbor's dog so much due to the loud explosions that the dog suffered a fatally bloated gut and died.

  • The claws really came out in the divorce of actress Anne Heche and cameraman Coley Laffoon as they fought over everything from yoga rugs to custody of their cat.

  • Team Aniston or Jolie?  Well if you were a dog you would probably choose Aniston. Jennifer Aniston is often seen out and about with her beloved dog Norman.  While it has been reported that Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt own two dogs together, Angelina’s diva-like behavior on the set of her new movie “Salt” had one canine co-star with his tail between his legs.  According to reports, Jolie and her doggie co-star, Bingo, are fighting like, well, cats and dogs.  Jolie complained to the director that the dog was missing his mark during filming, requiring Jolie to participate in more takes than she wanted to.

  • According to Denise Richards, her eldest daughter Sam was named after ex-husband Charlie Sheen’s cat. Denise explained that Charlie loved the cat so much he insisted on the same name. Since the divorce, Denise has been quoted as saying “we don't have the cat anymore.” Denise currently has 10 dogs.

  • Sometimes you need a friend when you are feeling down or when your entire family and country seem to be against you.  It is reported that during Monica-gate, Bill Clinton’s only pal was his dog Buddy, a Chocolate Labrador Retriever.

  • Sometimes boys can be dogs, and in a recent interview pop star Katy Perry announced she would no longer be kissing them.  “I've actually taken a vow of celibacy this year,” she told a recent issue of TV Guide. “No kissing anyone. Just my cat, Kitty Purry.”

  • Susan Boyle, the overnight sensation from Britain’s Got Talent, recently missed a concert, citing withdrawal – withdrawal from her cat, Pebbles!  According to the UK Mirror, Boyle kept shouting, 'I want my cat! I need my cat!' from a balcony overlooking a Liverpool hotel atrium.

  • Mickey Rourke, who made a comeback this year with his role in The Wrestler, thanked his dogs in his acceptance speech at the Golden Globes. “I'd like to thank all my dogs, the ones who are here and the ones who aren't here anymore,” Rourke said. “Sometimes, when a man is alone, that's all you got is your dog. And they've meant the world to me.”

  • Kate Gosselin had cats when she married Jon.  When the family decided to invite a dog into their home Kate expressed interest in a smaller breed, while Jon wanted a big dog.  They added two German Shepherds to their home, in late 2008; could this be the reason for their split?

  • While celebrities dog owners are usually seen out and about with their canine companions, their relationships with cats remains more mysterious since felines tend to canoodle with their owners behind closed doors.  However, it is known that Whoppie Goldberg owns Russian Blues while both Valerie Bertinelli and Carly Simon own Abyssinians.
