— 450 Events Nationwide Celebrate Man's Best Friend and Bring Attention to Responsibilities of Dog Ownership —
The American Kennel Club has declared Friday, September 17, “AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Day,” and announced hundreds of events to be held nationwide throughout the month of September. The goal of the initiative – being held for the second year – is to educate first-time dog owners about the responsibilities of dog ownership and help current owners enhance their relationships with their pets.

Nearly 450 AKC-affiliated dog clubs, as well as many other pet-related organizations are holding free events in their communities throughout September. Activities include AKC Canine Good Citizen tests, obedience/agility demonstrations, microchipping clinics, breed rescue information, therapy dog/service dog demonstrations, safety around dogs for kids, fundraisers, and many more entertaining and educational events.
On Saturday, September 18, 2004, the AKC will hold a flagship event in New York City's Madison Square Park, where local dog experts will host information tables and conduct demonstrations. The AKC's Raleigh, NC office will also hold its own AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Day celebration on that day.
“If you are considering bringing a dog into your life, these events are an ideal way to meet canine experts and learn about the resources in your area. AKC dogs clubs can assist dog owners with everything from training to locating a reputable breeder, and we encourage everyone to attend – whether a dedicated dog lover or new pet owner,” said AKC spokeswoman Gail Miller.

In addition to holding events to celebrate AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Day, the AKC looked into what it takes – besides just good intentions – when adding a four-legged friend to the family. While the benefits of pet ownership far outweigh the costs, every responsible dog owner knows that along with love and companionship comes financial responsibility. An online survey of more than 1,000 visitors to www.akc.org found that responsible owners can expect to spend $2,500 annually for their dog's food, grooming, vet check ups, pet sitting fees, etc. This is in addition to one-time costs such as a crate, spaying/neutering or emergency vet care, which according to respondents runs, on average, just over $2,100.
