AKC President Comments on Registration System Status

As you know, the AKC recently implemented a new registration system, replacing our aging mainframe-based processing system. This new system relies on document imaging and scanning technology to process and store all AKC registration paperwork. The use of digital imaging provides a permanent record of all AKC documents, allowing the AKC to provide faster, more accurate customer service. In addition, the new system provides the foundation for many new AKC services, including online dog and litter registration.

Unfortunately, we are experiencing some startup problems that have delayed the processing of registrations. As a result, a backlog of transactions has accumulated. Naturally, we are dealing with this backlog as aggressively as possible. We have extended the normal work hours, have added weekend processing, and are bringing on additional temporary personnel and workstations. We have also made some systems fixes that have already increased the work throughput and reduced the backlog. We have also implemented a number of actions designed to eliminate the backlog while not affecting the normal daily processing. All in all, we believe that significant progress is being made in eliminating the backlog and making the appropriate enhancements to the new system. We have set a target date of May 15th at which time it is anticipated that we will have eliminated the backlog. It should be noted that the backlog is being reduced by working the oldest transactions first. We also continue to process new items in a timely fashion.
