The New York State Legislature adjourned late last week, meaning that any bill not yet on the Governor’s desk will likely not advance this year.
The AKC thanks the numerous local dog clubs and responsible dog owners who took the time this session to contact their legislators on several important bills. Because of your efforts, bills to create the crime of pet theft and prohibit insurance companies from breed discrimination advanced farther than they ever had in previous sessions, and a bill to ban the accepted veterinary practice of debarking was stopped after gaining momentum in the last two weeks.
It is not expected that the legislature will return this year, but AKC Government Relations (AKC GR) will continue to closely monitor both the New York Assembly and Senate.
