Last week, the New Orleans City Council unanimously adopted changes to the city’s animal ordinance.
The extensive changes included updating vaccination requirements to a three-year term, requiring dogs to be moved indoors during extreme weather, incorporating a new breed-neutral designation of “potentially dangerous” dogs, providing due process protections for owners subject to enforcement actions, and updating the permit requirements for exhibitions (including dog shows). Despite AKC’s objection, an increase in the application fee for an intact dog permit, from $10 to $75, was also adopted.
The AKC thanks the dedicated constituents who worked closely with members of the City Council to best ensure that the rights of New Orleans’ responsible purebred dog breeders and owners were respected.
