Thanks to the tireless efforts of many AKC club members and breeders, a bill that would have had a detrimental impact on dog breeders and hobbyists in Iowa will not move forward this year.
Senate File 2361 (Formally SF 2166 and SF 2254) would have created numerous new requirements on those who own at least 4 intact dogs and receive any compensation for breeding. The AKC strongly believes all dogs deserve life in a safe, healthy and humane environment and that no dog should be kept in conditions where these basic needs are not met. However, many provisions in the bill were not in the best interest of dogs or responsible Iowa breeders. Read AKC’s previous Legislative Alert, which further outlines the concerns with this bill.
The AKC thanks the numerous AKC club members, breeders, hobbyists and exhibitors who spent a significant amount of time educating the Iowa Legislature about responsible breeders and the humane care of dogs.
